New Birds!! Stafford Canaries

Post by annague » Tue Sep 27, 2011 6:16 pm

Well... so long ago I can't even remember (back when I had some free money) I paid for a pair of Stafford Canaries and had to be put on a list to wait for them.

They are here at last! The male is a Variegated Red and the female is a Crested Frosted Rose.

They are pretty cute. I named her Red Riding Hood "Red" and him Big Bad Wolf "Wolf". English major funny  . I've attached some photos of my new fids.

First is Wolfie -- the male who is still molting.

Here is the hen. She has an adorable dark red crest that hooks around the back of her head (hence the name).

I added this photo to show the markings on Wolfie's back -- very unique and pretty! (Probably old hat to canary folks though).

Thanks Candace! Wonder if I can get them to breed for me next Spring? It would be nice to have some little Staffords...

EDIT: Yes, thank you -- the male is one she used breeding last year so he is proven and I was flattered she offered him to me because she is successful at winning in shows and I knew if she liked him he was a very nice Stafford.

It sounds a bit snobbish and (on one level is totally unimportant) but-- I know from my own experience -- you can really tell well-bred birds once you develop an eye for the standard. (Which I don't have yet  )

Ohhh.... where's that previous post -- I want to look at the pair you bought again. I can't believe they haven't sold either -- that's a good price. :)

Here they are in the bottom left (best pic I have right now)

Here he is with a different hen during quarentine
He is the crested one... the hen he is with now has very little dark, just on the head and wings... I will get a better picture, of course my camera isn't here today #-o These both have a rich red, no orange tinge what so ever, and nice frosting.
