Re: Lavendar Waxbill
An absolutely stunning finch you have there Cindy. I'm looking forward to the day when I have a pair
As for sexing them it can be quite difficult when looking at them but a good breeder can certainly pick a hen from a cock most of the time, easiest way is by the cocks call because to look at them a female is a little bit duller but try and pick that up in a large aviery.

Re: Lavendar Waxbill
I played a recording to them, the male has a sweet soft song, the female make like a low "chi" sound. They built an elaborate nest, she spends most of her time in there, I was able to catch a shot of him while she was peeking out of the nest. He has his favorite spot to stand in while she is in there.
They are rather shy and a little flighty. I can't see in the nest to tell if there are eggs or young.

Re: Lavendar Waxbill
Cindy,
My lavenders made a simillar, very elaborate nest too. They incubated four eggs until about 3 days due to hatch and quit sitting and never went back! I'm so disappointed. I have a green towel draped over the side of the cage where the nest is and keep from entering, except to feed and water, but that does not seem to help enough. Maybe they are just too young or inexperienced, but I really want lavender babies.

My pair is still in the room I quarantine them in, I only go in to turn the lights on and feed, they have gotten use to my daily schedule and move up out of the way and quickly go down to check out their food dishes after I leave the room. I can stand in the hall and watch them.

Re: Lavendar Waxbill
I would like to move them to a bigger cage, at the time I got them it was a very quick decision and the only cage I had for them was 24 inches long, one of my breeder cages. I generally breed in those them move the whole family to a bigger, clean cage once the little ones wean. They seem happy in there but I want to give them more fly room.
The pair has been on the nest almost everytime I walk by....could be they are nesting, it would be nice to get young from them.
