Question about Red headed parrot finches!

Post by BigBear0007 » Fri Oct 14, 2011 6:33 pm

Do females sing?
The female I got yesterday was singing just now!
Not as elaborate as the male, but just a trilling song!

"!Another website I visited mentioned that the cock has a trill call. Again, they both have it but the male's is definitely louder and more "trill" or "shrill"!

I have bred several different pairs and some hens do thrill, pretty darn well too. But none as long and loud as the males.
I have had some pairs where I never here even a peep out of the hen much .
Is your known male courting the hen? grooming, chasing?

I bought two parrot finches a while back, a male and a female. They went immediately inside the nest and moved everything I gave them in there. I thought, great, I will have eggs soon...not to be...both are males. I know cuz they both sing. Hope the same thing didnt happen to you.

No, he is just happy to have some company!
Actually he stopped singing since I got the other bird!
They have now stopped playing with the hay.

That's what I would do. Seperate them and observe the songs/calls.
I have bought several pair and had them flown in only for them to be same sexed pairs :? Frustrating.

Well I had them seperated for two hours.
Only my male sang a full song and the hen trilled a bit.
I put them back together and they bouncesed around
a little and then sat together quietly.
I will give them a couple weeks to see what happens!

My PF's don't sing per se... the just chirp very softly and and trill at times. My males trill far longer and way more often than the females.

Rarely do I hear even as much as a chirp except once in a while from the females (and little from the males except occasionally trilling) when I have a pair together.

My gut feeling if they are both making lots of noise is that they are probably both males -- PF's are the hardest birds to sex!

But I've been wrong before (and am hoping I'm wrong this time). Let us know... :)

Well they seem to be getting along very well.
I have not heard the female sing at all, only my male.
Maybe it was my male and I thought it was the new hen?
They move around so much, it's hard to tell who is who at times!

They didn't seem to like the plastic nest box.
So today I put in a wicker basket that looks like cave.
It is made for hamsters and other rodents.
They really like it and have been playing inside.
I will post some pictures.
