I had no idea where this belonged, but it has to do with species?

Anyways, to think I paid 20 for my hen and 15 for my cock! Only if we could get finch for a dollar and fifty cents!

I moved your posting to Bird Pricing as I think it is all about the pricing of Zebra finches.

Went to the PetSmart in Ottawa, 3 months ago when I got my Green Singer hen, Mia
She cost me $107.00 (with tax included)
my cock, Vinny cost me the same 6 months earlier.
I remember when my dad and me could get a green singer in the exact same store for $40.00.. or less! and that was when I was 8. 11 years ago...

In Sweden the price for a gouldian can be quite different from time to time.
The cheapest i bought cost 100 SEK ( about 6,80 USD )
And the most expensive i have seen costs about 370 USD
But most ordinary price is about 55 - 75 USD
Its quite rare to buy gouldians in petstores here, but sometimes you can. More often its private breeders.

I was at a few petstores today saw green singers are about 64.00 ea at petland, and then go to petsmart and they are 99.00 each!
This is just crazy. Why do they charge so much for them? Its not just the singers, its all other types of finches/birds. They are all almost double the price.
I havent bought birds from petstores in several years. Im so glad I have private breeders to buy from at very reasonable prices compared to petstore prices.

Petshops charge more because they have overhead--rent, utilities, taxes. Many breeders are hobby breeders and just looking to get a little return on their breeding efforts, and since they are not necessarily trying to make a profit, they can afford to sell for less.
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.

Wow! When compared else where, finches (Atleast Zebras) are cheapest in India.
Conversion : $1 ~= Rs.50
We get a pair of Zebra finches for Rs.200 or less some times even for Rs.150 when you directly buy from a breeder. So that is you get zebra finches for $3 or $4
Also I remember Gouldian Finches for Rs.1200 a pair. That's a mere $24
Society finches for Rs.400 a pair, so that about $8

Pradeep, I think you also need to consider the cost of living and income in India, compared to the U.S. and Europe. I've never been in India myself but I understand that some things are a lot cheaper there than they are here, but on the other hand people don't earn as much money. It's still amazing though how cheap zebras are...
By the way, I like your new avatar. Did you draw it yourself? It's cute!

Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Ursula,
Agree that average income per person is less, but still as I am seeing the prices of some birds, they seem too expensive outside India. When you get an iPhone for $99 in US how fair it is to pay $125 or more for a pair of birds?? This is what I felt
