ID Question

Post by AZJOE » Mon Oct 17, 2011 10:50 pm

Hello all,
I picked up a few adult zebras the other day from a friend to add to my breeding stock. Upon close investigation I noticed one female that was different. She is the first adult zebra that I have seen with red/pink eyes. She is fawn out of black cheek stock. Any input would be appreciated. my friend no longer has the parents but I also have her sister and her brother, both have normal eye color.

Thanks
Joe

Red eyes are usually caused by albinoism (is that a word?) well, anyways she may have some albino in her. Any spots of white where there shouldn't be?

Albino zebras are super rare and an absence of all color, so I doubt that is part of the equation. She is fawn/cream all over, with no white spots or marks anywhere. I have seen a few CFW whites with red/pink eyes but not many. I'm curious how many folks have red eyed fawns. My fawns in the past have had ruby eyes for a few weeks but then darkened up as they mature.

I have her paired up with a recessive silver, her sister with an orange breast and her brother with a CFW. Once I have proven out her genetics and isolated a line from her, I would like to add it to my Phaeo blood.

I found this interesting and perhaps she has CFW in her background.

http://www.efinch.com/species/cfwzeb.htm

"Continental CFW (Also known as new type or red eyed CFW)
Male: Like the Regular CFW, the male Continental CFW is a mostly white bird with the orange cheek and flank and black tear, breast and tail marks intact. The most desirable birds have strong markings. Unlike the Regular CFW, they have a cream color to their back and the tail bars are much darker, even black (see below). On the best Continental CFWs, the orange markings are still not as strong as the best Regular CFW males. They also have a ruby color to the eyes. The red eyes are much more noticeable in chicks, but can still be seen in the adults with the proper light."
