Celery

We got some celery stalks last night. Would it be okay for me to chop them up or grind them and give it to my birds?

i'd say chop them up.

De rib them...the long stringy thread that run through the stalk, peel them away, toss them and then chop the stalk up and give it to them. The ribs can be to tough for them. This was recommended to do when I had a Gray.

I don't feed my birds the stalks, but they go mad for the chopped up celery leaves.

Jacqui, years ago when I was breeding lovebirds we were warned about giving them the leaves, something to do with a chemical in the leaf...I will look into it and see if I can find any info on it.

Jacqui the time frame I was looking at was in the earlt 90's...there was concern ack then that celery contained high amounts of DDT but DDT was banned in the states in the 60's...some countries still use it. As with all veggies imported be cautious. When in doubt go organic.

This is a full list of safe and non safe foods for birds. According to this the leaves contain quiet a few good things.

I would still go easy on them it looks like there is some sort of salts in them.
