Is this a male or female fawn zebra????

Post by donnaleelee » Wed Oct 26, 2011 12:18 pm

I hand-raised these two siblings.
They are 6 months old now.
Do you think the fawn pied is a girl or boy??

He/she has NO breast-bars, but does have a "cheek color" on just one side of his face!!

Because "he" got his cheek patch, i assumed HE was a HE.
I thought they were brothers; but now they seem to be building a nest!!
EEKs....it will be such a bummer if she is a female.

i would say male personaly, as far as I know 2 males will build and sleep in a nest together
But more important, how you get it to just sit on your hand!! i have a hen that will eat out of the seed dish if i hold it,but wont sit in my hand, that is my next aim

That would be great if she is a male!!!
I hand-fed them since they were 10 days old. After they weaned from "formula" they kept getting "hand-fed" each day by me: greens, vedgies etc. So they stayed hand-tame, even though they live with other birds.
I have their aviary/cage OPEN so they usually fly to me every night to fall asleep on my warm laptop.

Fawn and fawn cheek are two different mutations. "Fawn" refers to the body color mutation, whereas "fawn cheek" is a mutation causing a change in color of cheek patches. A female fawn cheek zebra will show fawn colored cheek patches, just as a black cheek female will have black or grey cheek patches.
Your pied is most definitely a male!

I'd go with male. And closely bonded males nest and roost together. The pied gene probaly took away the other markings.

Can you post a few photos of them together? Possibly with her/his beak showing to compare colors?

Thank you!!
I am so relieved!!

Yes, the cheek patch is only one one side.

question:
Is the reason you guys think he is male is because he has a cheek patch? So he doesn't need a breast-bar too??

check this link out, the male white doesn't have either a cheek or breast bar, the male pied only has a little blotch of breast bar. http://zebracrazy.byethost13.com/AllMut.htm

Does it sing or just meeps??
only males sing, the females meeps.

looks like a female to me :)

Even though its pied,
its not pied enough to make the
"male" markings vanish (absent)
You can see it still has colors, fawn color, in the cheeks
and on the sides/flanks and on the chest.
The male markings is only absent if the pied (white feathers)
are on this areas.
It could be a female with
male markings (the half cheek)
for some reasons.
