The Prevue nickel plated cages came with an acrylic insert that runs around the bottom of all sides of the cage. Super nice. The small birds and parakeets use the set-up with the little seed cups that are inserted into areas within the acrylic area.
The Gouldians and Stars are too big to use the little seed cups so I've taken the larger seed and water troughs that came with my HQ cages and put them in the Prevue cage. They can hang just where the acrylic starts.
That acrylic liner really does keep the seeds in.

Wow that's very cool to adopt birds. where are you located, or should ask how do you find places to get on an adoption list? I would love to have some more and have a huge enclosure waiting! I have an indoor greenhouse is literally the entire length of our place like 80' long. I enclosed a 14' section for my new finches, just took the plunge recently and is way fun! I will have to get pics for you all to see, but have all live plants for them and they seem to be really happy as they are singing away!

I travel to Rochester, NY to the wonderful Second Chance Bird Rescue.
www.secondchancebirdrescue.com
They mostly have the bigger hookbills but they also have some lovely pigeons and doves. They sure do need the support of bird lovers everywhere.
I have the feeling that if you put a "will take unwanted finches" advert in your local paper that you would inundated. There are folks that get birds and just don't like the mess. Imagine!
That craigslist.org may also be the place to put out the word that you would like to take unwanted finches.

I live in a very rural area in ID. I had to drive 3 hours just to get to petco...lol The local pet store here is minimal and is where I gave three male finches (2 zebra, 1 society) to resale. So am doubtfult the variety of finches I am interested in is available in my area. I ultimately want a ton of color in my finch garden but too will stay within the more passive species. too bad the adoption rescue doesn't offer shipping. I would love to adopt some gouldians! our indoor greenhouse garden is huge and am thinking I should have done this years ago! The bird I have love their enclosure and just seem so hapy and always busy doing something.
what kind of enclosure do you keep your's in? You have a lot right? like 30+ birds? I could house some 30+ in this enclosure according to the cage/bird calculator. lol can't imagine what they sound like all singing! way cool!

Your greenhouse sounds lovely! That is what I would like to have some day...a conservatory with plants, birds and running water!
I have 35 birds and they are separated into four cages. I am in the process of designing and building (with a neighbor's help!) an aviary that would be about seven feet tall x six feet wide and three feet deep.
The zebs and maybe the societies would be in there. Currently I have two big flight cages that have zebs and societies in them and two smaller flight cages. One cage holds fourteen - which has worked only because they came in that flock and are paired off so I didn't want to separate them. They live very companionably but then they have been a flock from before they were at the rescue.
Probably no rescue would ship....this is because of their stringent policies of contract, home visits and general well being of the bird.
Singing Wings Aviaries may have the variety of bird that you are looking for. I'm not sure of their web address but I should come up quickly in Google. They do ship. I've never bought a bird this way but I'm sure there are members on this forum that have and had it be successful.
Pictures of your greenhouse please!

Our green house is actually pretty neat! My hubby designed it and is just a part of the house and visable from every room. It literally is in every room now that I think about it...lol Our home is an earth friendly home, is passive solar and so our south side is one huge glass wall! This is where I put the birds. They get all the natural light and the plants just naturally do well! I even got tomatoe plants in with the finches and they seem to like picking at the smaller veggies...haha! not like they can pick them put but seem to think these are prizes or treasure they accidently stumbled onto and think they should try to move them...lol
I will post some pics once I figure that all out. The rest of my garden is being re seeded so doesn't look like much right now. I got tired of my general veggie plants and pulled them all to re seed some new stuff. I was picking like 50+ tomaoes per week and got tired of them. We grow year round and actually slow it down in the summer because their is so much available in town and we don't have to rely on our garden.

rkn....wow!....your home and aviary sound just beautiful..you MUST post pics soon....inquiring minds and nosey people like me want to see!
Idaho is so beautiful....we go through there often when we drive out to Oregon to visit my family. We were just through there this summer when we had to go out for my Dad's funeral. It was a tough trip but the scenery was very soothing to look at when we weren't driving through the smoke from all the fires.

wev'e been here for 4 years, are in Salmon. The wildlife here is amazing! gorgeous! We are however entertaining the idea of moving as professionally this has been disappointing....nothing concrete yet but is a possibility for us overall. I'd like to get back to the midwest anyways.
Living in a passive solar earth home is something everyone should look into! I know for us, we will rebuild this place where ever we move to should we move in the future! We literally have NO monthly heating bills...earth warms and cools your home! and we have very small electric bill as we hardly use eletricity due to huge windows. Is way cool for anyone into birds! I just wish I would have taken the plunge years ago! I could house a hundred easily in my living room...lol
I will post pics of my bird space. I got a few on the camera just haven't loaded them into computer yet. My firend's want to see it too, as we use to live in MS. and is great for birds there! My firend's want to take the plunge but are waiting until they get more info and are asking me the ups and downs of having birds. So far no real downs to reports. i don't have to cage clean and I think that woudl be the only down I can think of?

There is a similar adoption place where I live like this, not just birds. They had a black masked lovebird but the adoption fee was like $150??plantsandbirds wrote:I travel to Rochester, NY to the wonderful Second Chance Bird Rescue.
