New to forum and to finches-Anyone close to Idaho????

Post by rkn » Wed Feb 20, 2008 6:01 pm

Hello everyone,

I took the plunge into finches and love it! Has been a few weeks is all and am reading a ton, learning lots, and so would love to visit with other finch lovers, and breeders too since I would like to buy some more birds.

OK about me, first can't type so typos are just part of my internet online experience...am married, 44y/o, work in medical field, love horses and show a good deal. I have 15y/o son, live in ID. right now, been all over the USA, hubby is previous airforce.

My finch garden is indoors, is 14'x7highx4'wide. So far I have nine birds, most are males and great singers! I have one society male, two zebra females, four spice and so far looks like one female and the other 3 are guys, and two orange wax bills which are male/female pair. I would like to buy some really colorful finches if anyone has some forsale and will ship. email me!

looking forward to meeting everyone,

rkn

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. When did you take the plunge? What kinds do you have? I actually started out with 12 but gave three males away because I didn't like how agressive they acted toward the entire group. They were zebra males so is why I have to females in my group. Live and leearn....lol

btw how do you post to your post? all i could find was the reply button to my original post. am lost already...

I just started with Finches a couple months ago. I have 2 males Zebra brothers....and a M/F pair of Lady Gouldians. I am on a waiting list for some Owl Finches. I should get them in a few weeks...it is sooo hard to wait!

As far as I know you just use the "Reply" button to your own post. Maybe somebody else knows more!

I am into this 5 weeks or so and so far is somethign I wished I would have done years earlier! I have my finches in my kitchen area and they have literally enticed the entire family to cook and sit down more and eat a meal together rather then being "on the run". seem like everyone enjoys watching them and listening to them. I have one male society finch and he literally sings all day long...luckily we all seem to like his song!

are you going to breed your gouldian pair? are they hard to breed? Sure are amazing color variations! love the vibrant colors!

rkn....no I am not going to breed my Gouldians. I do want to breed my Owls when I get them....as I just love the looks of those little cuties. :D

Isn't it wonderful how birds can bring a family together? My daughter has 3 parakeets....I got her infected with the bird bug by always having parakeets when she was little.

I do have 2 lovebirds also. I used to have parakeets and a Sun Conure....but the Sun was waay too loud for Hubby's sensitive hears....didn't bother me though! And the Parakeets were getting too dusty for me....I really hated to rehome them but it had to be done.

I love my Lovies and Finches....they are keepers! :D

There are some people on here who have the beautiful blue mutations of Gouldians. Check out the Gallery you will find some nice bird pics in there!

Also the Finch Info Center is wonderful for information and pictures too. It is the link on the left side of the page of this Forum.

Well...I must get my butt out of this computer chair and finish cleaning the house....gotta earn my keep! I have been on more than usual while my knee is recovering from surgery...can't put a lot of weight on the knee much yet so lurking around the forum keeps me from getting bored.

Hey Wa is kind of close, almost neighbors! Where are you at? I am in Salmon ID. land of elk and deer...lol and now a handful of finches...hehe!

My bird enclosure is part of a very large garden space we have inside our home. We have an anternative type house. Anyway the finches are in the kitchen area so it would intice everyone to cook and eat. That being said they are not exposed to any foods or stuff from the kitchen as it is rather a large area and they are sort of like a painting on the wall sort to speak, except live. I call them my bird fish tank...lol

when you have baby gouldians let me know, I'd be interested in a few. I got a ton of bird space let and want to add the colorful ones! Love color!!!!
Also love the bleu ones!!!

what is a blue lobster? ok sounds yummy like lobster w/blue cheese sauce...sorry! am hungry and LOVE sea food. Actually see food and jumps onto my hips kind of love...lol

I too have horses, well one right now. She is in Wa. outside of Seattle area. She is a show horse, won her WP class at the aphc world show! whooHoo! super cute girl to boot! My trainer has her right now and will be showing her in some futurities soon.

Will have to get some pics over the weekend. Got a few of our place but nothing wow wee nor that show the birds. Here is a link to us.

Yes have worked in glass art for years. I am now taking up hot glasses only to dabble and play in...got burnt out on the cold/warm glasses. Guess I just want to play with fire...hehe! But love glass and color and is all great fun! I had a studio for years, some of the pics off my old website show it. Haven't done as much now since being in ID. just got burnt out overall. I got to the point I could look at a pic and imagine it in glass. kind of crazy huh? that's when I knew it was time to take a big break!!! I still do photography and love to take bird pics, just haven't got around to capturing my lil guys yet. Most of my professional work is in the horse world. i have been a freelancer on the side of my "real; job" for say 20 years? yikes I feel old all of a sudden! but before photoshop and computer images they're were dinasuars like me roaming the earth...ha!

Now I discover finches and what fun this is and find a forum, too fun!!!!

Ya know what? I took pics once in FL. of what i now recognize as gouldian finches and thought these were the most beautiful rare birds...lol and what one earth!!!! we can buy them,? someone slap me silly! I swear this is how new I am to finches, I didn't know abouth all this until a friend insisted I buy a dozen birds in jan. said would help ease the winter blues! wow did it ever!!! and all the info online....OMG! and now to find these rare gouldians are not rare at all just about everywhere and if lucky enough you can buy one! how cool and weird is that....

Forgot to say, I had a baby owl last year, a sawhet (sp) and was like a pocket owl in size! found it literally here in ID. and sort of got me drooling over birds once again! They are all so pretty and interesting to watch, and even the owls we have here are amazing! I think I am a found bird watcher!!! whooHoo!

Wow, beautiful pictures. Your home sounds amazing, and the area is just awesome. Maybe I should talk hubby into retiring in Idaho! :D

I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it.
