I agree Ursula certain clothes, even a towel wrapped around wet hair can throw birds off a bit.

I would personally not withhold food to get them use to me as soon as I get them. Some birds especially ones from a show that have been in crowded cages, moved around, have had a hand in and out of the cage catching other birds and themselves, people rushing by them, noise...they may have not eaten well during that time and may be very stressed. They need to be left alone in their new environment to calm down, adjust, eat and rehydrate. Plenty of time afterwards for them to adjust to a new owner.
That's too funny with the long pants! But it's true, animals get so used to your entire appearance. They take in the whole figure, not just your face.

I think the flappy dark clothing might remind them of big predator birds. Not sure about the red though...

And I agree, I wouldn't withhold food either! Patience is key IMHO. Using treats is fine, but to completely starve them even a few hours can be dangerous for their health.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I don't do it right away, that'd like traumatize them! I should have said I wait a week or two until they get settled in.

hi
mine always stayed calm after a few days,as i spent most of my waking moments in thier presence and they soon learn to accept you, also i left a radio on low all day so that they got used to a bit of uncommon noise, moving them out of the gouldians cage is a good idea,as they dont set well with most other species apart from societies, but i also remember the ones in the bottom cages where more flighty than the others because they couldnt see your face but they did eventually get used to me as my seat was directly opposite the cages and all of them could see me from there, the only real problem i had was when i went in there with one of my ball gowns on they dint like it!! i think it was the colour i dont think they liked the red and the glitter

I have a couple of female zebra finches that are at least 8 years old now and they are just as spooky as when I first got them I think. :? They are not too bad if I come up to their cage slowly and talk quietly to them, but no matter what, once I put my hand it there for anything - they just spook. I love their little "honking sounds" but they just are not calm like other species of finches. I had tried putting one in with a couple of male gouldians several years ago, but it did not take long before she was bossing both the boys around, way too much!
Gouldians, RC Cordon Bleu's, and a 9 year old zebra finch.

hi
it is surprising what they get used to i always had my hand in the cages when they werent breeding of course!but they do get used to you after a while mine would even tolerate cleaning the cage bottoms out without to much fuss.you just have to bear with it and have a bit of patience the more they see of your face the quicker they get used to you
