Had a prob, cleared up, but How may have this happened?

Okay, this is a really odd situation that happened, By the way, Everyone is fine now and back to normal, but what I am curious about, from others here, how this may have happened. @-@'

My birds get a good diet of Veggies, Egg food, fruit, Oyster shells, in the worst case scenario calcium plus, Gourmet finch seed and Zupreem.
For the most part, they eat most of this which on the flip side keeps them REALLY healthy, But I have been run off my feet for the last week and a half nursing 2 sick birds back to health. The food they get is always fresh and the cages are cleaned sometimes every 2 days, but most time once a day, which made this odd. The only thing out of the ordinary was it's been a tad cold in the house, but everyone's got blankets around their cages.

My Female Society finch Haru, she some how got an intestinal infection and was popping seed rather then digesting, funny I pulled her from the cage shortly before this happened. Got her on Tetratex and fed her baby apple sauce, because all but 1 society that I owned had runny stools and seemed a bit 'seedy' I put them on the Tetratex for less of a time and gave them apple sauce, in 3 days Haru was Healthy again, and the societies where healthy again. Thank goodness! Shortly after that Snowy developed a Respiratory infection, and She's now back on her feet and healthy again, but I had to put the antibiotic into her water and give her 3 doses, in the middle of the night for 3 days straight, by syringe to bring her back, Who we, that was a trip in a half, but relieved she's better.

What I don't get is, these birds get the best diet and is kept clean, yes the tray edges, perches, and toys get washed, too in the process.

with this I don't get it ???
Any suggestions as to why these 2 illnesses may have occurred, other then their hand tamed finches???
(I was my hand thoroughly before handling)
Any input would be most appreciated.

Have you ever done a parasite/Ronex12% or Ronivet S 12% treatment on your birds?

Have they every been dewormed?

Parasites can get into the internal organs and bloodstream and they can get secondary infections like a respiratory infection.

If you have never treated with Ronex Extra Strength 12% I recommend that you do so, you can treat with up to 2 times the strength of the powder to 1 times the amout of water for 3 days and normal strength of the 12% for the other 3 days....

Since you are having an issue I would treat at 2 times the powder to 1 times the water for the 7 days and also mix in Amoxitex powder at the recomended powder amount. Amoxitex and Ronex can be given at the same time...then give probiotics for 3 to 4 days then after 14 day of the last day of treatment then retreat with the regular strength of 12 % Ronex for 7 days. Then probiotics for 4 days.

@Cindy, I hope that you reply to this. Now Everyone is Pooping normally after the Tetratex, Mind you it is big poop, but I will get them on this Ronex or Ronivet S, I really don't want to have to do this again NOR do I wish to lose a bird EVER again!

I do know that Snowy has an icky bottom, And I clean her up all the time but it never seems to work, so, maybe this is what is wrong with her.

couple more questions, How do these parasites start? I don't use wood shavings, just newspapers to line their cage. would I need to use bird cage liner to prevent this ever happening again?

Also, should I treat all of my birds for this Parasite?

Most of the time the bird brings them with them and nicely shares with the others in the flight or cage. Parents can have it also and be strong enough with good diet but pass it onto the young. Babies have a very immature immune system and parasites and illness love that and flourish. It gets into the birds organs, lungs and bloodstream, starving the babies of nutrients and oxygen. Most babies die in the nest, others around 3 or 4 months just after fledging.

The bird usually dies gasping and it can be confused with air sac mites, most the time the birds have a secondary lung infection.

This is what I would do....treat the whole flock with a combination of Ronex 12% (Extra strength...if you can only get the 6% you can always double the powdered amount to 1 times the water.

I would do this....12% Ronex or Ronivet S (Ronex is in a bigger container) mix up 2 times the powdered amount and add 1 times the amount of Amoxitex (Not Tetratex) Give it to the birds for 7 days. You want to double the Ronex owder since you have something going on and you want to hit it hard.

Probiotics for 3

Deworm for 1 day

Probiotics for 3

then 14 day after the first dose of Ronex give it to them a single strength for 7 days (if and only if the birds seem to have a respiratory infection do you add the amtibiotics to the 2nd dose)

then probiotics for 3

you may also consider coccicare...it sounds like one of the birds has a messy bottom so to be on the safe side treat with coccicare for 7 days

then probiotics

Thanks, for that I WILL get them on this, Wow, Not sure who brought this @-@' I did at one point lose a Female bird to Vomiting and Major fluffing, but she's been gone for a while now D': I miss her. She may have passed it on?, I was told she Died of Egg binding! yet she was only exposed to the one with the icky bum (snowy) and my 3 society boys (I like to call them my babies), just by being in the same room. the boys and the female that I thought died of egg binding lived in the same cage. we had to separate her cause of aggression and then we got snowy, and she was never in the same cage as the other female. just with the male society finches.
Also I forgot to mention, Snowy is not egg bound, THANK god, but I did notice blood on the egg, Mind you her stools aren't bloody, they're normal, the color has varied from tanish brown to brown, but shortly after she laid, she got the Respiratory infection. Glad I asked, this might kill us now but healthy happy birds are worth it in the end.

How does this happen to get passed on, can it be Air bourn? I know you mentioned DNA, but can Poop pass it along?

Keep these on hand (put them in the fridge to add another 6 months shelf life to them) use ronex, wormaway and coccicare with any new birds coming into the house. Generally parasites arent passed through air but taken in by ingesting food that has droppings on it, pecking at the cage grate or floor, contaminated food or water, and passed from one bird to another through feeding. Actually the one that passed could have gotten it from one that appeared healthy or she bought it into the flock with her.

The amoxitex and ronex 12%....to start the first week
1 tsp of ronex 12% (doubling the powder) and 2tsp of amoxitex to 1 quart of water.

If using a 2 quart container use 2 tsp of ronex 12% and 4 tsp of amoxitex to 2 quarts of water.

the second treatment of ronex just use 1 tsp to 2 quarts of water or a 1/2 tsp to 1 quart.

Keep the unused miture in the fridge.

By the way I did happen to ask about snowflakes illness, with the feathers around her vent being yellow and sticky at one point and every body jumped to the conclusion of egg binding, Which is Probably why this situation got out of hand. I got her a mate to stimulate her, which it did and it's stimulated this darn protozoa parasite...

Morning Bird strongly advises against mixing an antibiotic, Ammoxitex or Tetratex with Ronex, the Aviary I am buying from said this, I am not sure how your birds take to it, I will more then likely spacing these medicines Ie. after 7 days of treatment leave 3-5 days in between, I don't want any tragedies, no over medicating Etc.

But I will see what happens with the Ronex, and if snowy isn't cleared up I will get her on the cocci care. and worm away everyone for 1 day.

that can be many things...the bird may have an infection, could have parasites in the lungs or stomach and they are coughing and trying to expel them, like a reflex. Could be bacterial....a secondary infection.

I use Newspaper at the bottom, but I don't use grates.

but as I said cleaned everyday. ^^' Haha, too bad, about the learning to read.
