I went on a finch food buying spree today and got some treats for my finches other than the seed and egg food they've been getting. I've given them some of these foods before, but specificially wanted to make sure its safe for parents to feed young babies to.
zucchini - (which will be skinned, boiled and chopped)
corn - (which will be boiled and taken out of the outer "shell")
white potato - (microwaved and the white part mashed)
organic all-natural applesauce (served as is)
Are all of these ok to give to parents feeding chicks in addition to the seed and egg food?

I think they are OK.
I would concentrate mostly on the egg food, and have the veggies as a smaller portion of the food.

Try a tiny pit of sweet potato also, you can cook it in the microwave and mash the insides....lot of vitamin A. Try pumpkin puree, it is good to, add a little wheat germ to the pumpkin also.

I don't know about the white potato, but the zucchini should be fine, and I would leave it raw, just chopped into finch-bite-size pieces, or you could slice rounds and let them eat out the middle, like it do with cucumbers. I don't think the corn needs to be cooked either, I know some people serve half a cob to their aviary.
I agree with Gary, though, let the main food be eggfood for the protein, and the veggies on the side. Broccoli is another good one, chopped up fine.

I agree. I serve finely chopped raw organic(!) zuccini, and I give them frozen corn kernels that I microwave only for 30 seconds on high to defrost them a little. All my birds love especially the corn, the zucchini is not one of their favorites but gets eaten.Sally wrote:I don't know about the white potato, but the zucchini should be fine, and I would leave it raw, just chopped into finch-bite-size pieces, or you could slice rounds and let them eat out the middle, like it do with cucumbers. Mine adore uncooked corn on the cob.
