Question about my Goldbreast
My male Goldbreast is making an extremely loud chirping noise very early in the morning. All of the other birds are still asleep at this time. It started about 4 weeks ago. It’s not the most pleasant sound. It figures that this sould come from my smallest bird.
Any ideas why this started or has anyone had something similar?

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
Chase...I have a post somewhere in regards to this. They are nest sleeper and for some odd reason the male I had would sit in the same spot every morning at 4:30, 5:30 and make this piercing sharp song. Most irritating and very loud for such a tiny bird.

turning on their light when he started stopped the piercing song but it meant I had to get up. If he sings at the same time everymorning, set a time for about 15 minutes before he usually starts see if that helps. Just have it set for his cage....

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
I gave them to a friend that has an large avairy on the other side of her home. While here it was an issue until his cage lights went on. I tried moving the cage to toher room but he did it anyway. They are happy in the big spacious home now.

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
This made me chuckle. I checked on the Finch Info Center under Species to see what the Goldbreast was like. Under 'Song' ...... it says NO DATA. Evidently some of you have too much data on the song of the Goldbreast

My wife is giving me some "data" each morning when this little thing wakes her up.

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
I have a goldbreast pair and a strawberry pair in my mixed flight. They both crank up and have a singing contest at the wee hours just like you are currently enjoying. The strawberry male has a two note repetitive call and the goldbreast just has a one note repetitive call. Both are unbelieveably loud - smoke alarm loud - and they begin the concert while it is still dark. I wonder if they can see in the ultraviolet or some other wavelength of light that humans cannot perceive, because to my eyes, it is still dark outside. They are singing the sun up, just like roosters, I guess. Turning on the lights does not work for mine. Going in and shushing them, making them move away from their special singing perch they have selected for the solo does not good either. You cannot make them stop. Mine do not do this all year long - only during breeding season - thankfully. These two birds are not popular with other members of my family either, but they are sooooo cute. And, the strawberry male has a beautiful real song that is just a joy to listen to, especially when it is not at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. I found I could delay the onset of the singing by maybe 20 minutes or so by using some roll-down blackout curtains on the window their flight backs up to, which faces east, giving them a prime view of the anticipated sunrise. The only other option which worked for me was to move the pairs to a temporary cage located in my laundry room with a west facing window. I can close the door and that helps block the sound, and I don't think they feel as strongly about singing the sun up when they are not able to view in the eastern direction at all. Don't know if any of this helps, but it is just a mystery how such tiny birds can make such loud calls. I have shaken in my boots thinking about what it would be like to live in Vietnam, where strawberry finches live in the wild, and hear that kind of racket at that hour by all those wild strawberries!

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
These post are so funny to me because I have been going through the same thing. My strawberry males have been singing ALL NIGHT long for the past week. In the complete dark almost. My goldbreast used to do this , but it was more of a loud shreek!
I think it just comes with the species....

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
When we go off to shows we put our birds in those small carrier cages & place them in bankers boxes to keep them warm & quiet. The boxes are then placed in the truck & a sheet placed over them for the trip.. We noticed on one trip that we left very early before dawn, that as the sun came up, those Goldbreast males just went nuts singing their hearts out... This was under a sheet with just the light coming through where the handle areas are located. Could not believe it..

"Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark."
This is one of my favorite quotes from Tagore and I have the plaque hanging in my bird room

The goldbreast is one of my favorite birds and I cannot hear them without praising their Creator and mine... What Faith to sing in the dark... the faith they have that the sun will shine even though they are yet trapped in the dark ! I actually call their aviary the Faith Aviary

Re: Question about my Goldbreast
Since both the Strawberry and the Goldbreast are closely related, it is not surprising that they have similar habits.
Many have commented on the smoke alarm sound from their Strawberries while it is still dark. Luckily for me, I am a very sound sleeper, or all those male Strawberries in the room next to my bedroom might drive me to drink!
