Aviary Pictures
Sorry I never got around to posting the pics here. I've been a bit tied up with work and stuff. I did finish the Aviary in Early January, and here are some pictures (links) when it was finish, but prior to getting any birds.
Initially, I started out with 5 Societies, 3 European Goldfinches and 3 Spice Finches. All have been getting along great. I have a couple of happily breeding societies (although I have since removed all the nests and nesting material), but now have 11 Societies for a total of 17 birds.
For those who kept up with some of my early posts, the European I had with no feathers on his/her head, now has a full covering of feathers and is doing well.
Here are the pictures. They are smaller than the originals, but still about 1mb each, so I linked them instead of forcing them to load automatically:
Front of the Aviary
Back of the Aviary
Side Hall of the Aviary
Homemade Pond
The pond has since been taken out of service as I found it was a major pain to properly clean. I have since put in a basic bird bath for now, until I rework the pond into a more easily cleaned version. They enjoyed the pond, so I don't want to get rid of it entirely. The small wall heater in the hall, maintains the temperature very well, even during the cold parts of this winter (even with all the windows in there). Keeping it all enclosed behind the door and plexi-glass helps that situation. The rest of the room will be turned into my office.

Due to the time of year I actually finished it and actually got some birds, it has been too cold to open the windows. On the front wall of the aviary are 4 filtered vents to help keep unwanted particles from getting into the aviary (cat hairs and such mainly), but it also manages to keep aviary smell out of the rest of the house (the smell isnt bad or strong even but it keeps the two areas separate).
I do plan on opening the windows once it warms up more and during the summer. I need to do a little more protective work rather than relying solely on the regular screens to protect them from potential outside predators or to allow them to get their nails caught up in the fine mess screen. They seem to enjoy sitting at the windows and watching the other birds outside, as I have a few bird houses, a birdbath, and various bushes outside the window that other small birds seem to enjoy. I have not yet noticed any aggressive or problematic birds hanging around that area though.
The room also has it's own heat supply and filtered vent from the central A/C when needed. I have been considering an air purifier, but have noticed no problems as of yet to need one. The only time I found the start of a moth problem was due to some seed I order that already had moths in it, but that was contained quickly and easily.
To date they all seem quite happy in there, and I but cheap small trees on occasion to put in there for them, as the Europeans really like them (especially they hibiscus that they ate up in a couple weeks, but at $6 each, its pretty cheap..hehe).
As for sitting in there and enjoying them, I do that fairly often. Quite often I sit in there and read. I plan on moving the office to that room, but that is a major job, as it is far more than just moving furniture. I maintain my own internal corporate rack computer/network system which will have to be moved and rewired to there as well, but once I do, I will also be putting in a live video feed of the aviary so that I can check up on it from the web from time to time. Thats a project for this summer though.
