New Purple Grenadiers and BBCBs
I am so excited about these new birds. The four Purple Grenadiers are three hens and one male, all parent-raised, NFSS closed-banded 2010 siblings. I have unrelated mates ready for them, the hens have the black top beak which indicates that they are in breeding condition.
The two pairs of Blue-breasted CBs are also NFSS closed-banded 2011, two bloodlines, so all their babies will be related, so I will be on the hunt for more bloodlines.
They are set up in all-male and all-female quarantine cages for now. I can't wait for them to get out of quarantine!

The male PG is an incredibly beautiful bird - not to slight the others, but he is a real standout!

Beautiful!!!
Looking at the PGs, I almost think that the female is prettier than the male. What a nice pattern with the white stripe! I've never seen PGs in real life and mostly you see pictures of males. Very nice!!

Re: New Purple Grenadiers and BBCBs
Thanks everyone, I am thrilled with them. Yes, Candace, those birds are in such good feather, they obviously had good care with their previous owner. They were shipped Delta from San Diego to Atlanta, then back to Dallas/Ft. Worth last Friday.
This is a perfect example of the networking that is made possible by forums such as this. A forum member, kcdozy, found out these birds were for sale, and he knows I have Purple Grenadiers. So he told the breeder to hold on to them till he could talk to me. The breeder had never shipped, and Rich told him how to do it, so I could get my hands on these wonderful additions to my finch family. Without Rich's help, I would not have them--thank you, Rich!!

Those birds are so beautiful, but I have to admit that when I had a pair in my aviary I was surprised by how large they were.
Much bigger than most of our other little finches....

Re: New Purple Grenadiers and BBCBs
Beautiful birds, Sally! I have never seen the BBCB's in person - they appear (on my monitor anyway) to be a softer, more pastel-colored bird?
I am struck by the great condition of these birds and know you will have a true leg-up with them due to the efforts of an excellent breeder.
Congrats!

Re: New Purple Grenadiers and BBCBs
Fardad, that is the biggest problem with this species, trying to find new bloodlines. They are available, but not in great numbers. If only the rules weren't so strict between our two countries, so we could swap bloodlines. It would benefit birdkeepers in both countries so much.psilocybin6 wrote:Congrats!!
Lack of blood is a pain... and you really cannot have enough blood when it comes to working with these guys... That is exactly why we need more people like you (and the breeder you got these PGs from) in my area!
Good luck with them.
