Looking at the PGs, I almost think that the female is prettier than the male. What a nice pattern with the white stripe! I've never seen PGs in real life and mostly you see pictures of males. Very nice!!
I agree with you, Ursula. The male is stunning with his brown and purple/blue coloring, but its only two colors basically. The hen is an intricate pattern of various hues, just lovely.

This breeder just has the one pair. In fact, he was so discouraged after advertising these young ones for several weeks with no response that he was thinking of getting rid of his breeding pair as well. But he has decided to keep them, and now that he knows how to ship, he will probably offer future babies on a national basis. He is a member of the Finch Save program of NFSS, so I would expect that he will offer them on that forum first.

Paradise Earth in AZ is advertising Purple Grenadiers for sale. They are a bit high on their price, I'm quite sure they are imports. I did purchase a pair from there, and they were in great condition. However, the male was in breeding mode and the hen was not. I had them together, and I knew he was chasing her and plucking a little, but I didn't think it was serious enough to separate them. Wrong--I checked one morning and found her dead on the floor of the cage, he had taken out his anger on her. I was sick, it was my fault, I should have separated them. One of these new hens will be paired with him, and she is in breeding mode (top beak turns dark), but I will still have to be very careful. The males of this species can get a bit aggressive when in breeding mode, even to their mate. My pair that has bred are now so bonded that even out of breeding mode, they get along fine.

Martie wrote:Beautiful birds, Sally! I have never seen the BBCB's in person - they appear (on my monitor anyway) to be a softer, more pastel-colored bird?

I am struck by the great condition of these birds and know you will have a true leg-up with them due to the efforts of an excellent breeder.

Congrats!
Martie, my camera kind of washed out the color on the BBCBs, they are not as pastel as they appear in the photo. They are not as bright blue as a BCCB, almost but a bit softer. One thing I have noticed with them is they have a very staccato chatter, similar to the RCCBs. Perhaps it is because they are separated by sex right now, and once paired up, they may mostly do this when they have eggs or chicks, as the RCCBs do.

Rancel, I don't know of anyone that is selling parent-raised birds right now, what you find for sale is pretty much imports. As I said in another post, Paradise Earth in AZ is advertising them. He is asking as much for imports as I paid for these parent-raised, NFSS closed-banded 2010 birds! I got the bargain!

I know of two other breeders right now, and I'm sure there are more out there. Not everyone is on a forum, or in an organization, and so they stay in the background and you never hear about them.

Sally I am so excited for you -- not only for the gorgeous PG's but for your BBCB's! Now you will have all three available species to work with.

I will be awaiting news of future clutches for these species! :)
