The ones I use are between 80 and 100 watt, but it really depends on how close to your cage you place them. If you have them right next to the cage I'll go even lower. The best test is using a thermometer; if the temp goes above 32 degrees I move the light further away or install a weaker bulb

My infrared bulb is just a 60 watt and the dome unit it plugs into is rated only up to 80W. But the cord has a dimmer switch on it and I can adjust the heat level at will. I just have the dome sitting right on top of the cage right now and as long as I don't turn the heat full power it isn't an issue of overheating the bars.

But when Hubby has time we will 'redo' the lamp and raise it up above the bars so if I need full power I can turn it up all the way without worrying about melting the cage down...hehe!

Hee..hee....FF....you need to start buying those bulbs by the case!! :P

My lovies are in nesting mode right now and they really want OUT OF THE CAGE!!! I have a play area on top of the cage and they shred newspaper like crazy...but it keeps them busy at least. And I keep mine clipped so they don't get over to the finch cage. If they land on the ground they wait for an assist from me to hoist them back up. They sure are little stinkers...gotta watch them every minute!!

60watt red bulb warm enough if only bulb?

Post by peeps3 » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:51 pm

For our gouldians and the others, question about bulbs. I have a full spectum day bulb, which I have kept on all the time because the house is chilly at night, but now want to add a red bulb. If it is a 60 watt, is that enough, or should I keep the day bulb on still all night, too? The two gouldians have been looking a little puffed up lately. And is it okay to shine the red bulb directly at the side of the cage or would the glare bother them? Should it be positioned up top, like the other I have? Thanks!

moe moe2....try looking in a home improvement store or variety store like Home Depot....Walmart....Menards...they will most likely be much cheaper. Pet stores always charge a premium price for those kinds of items.

What Featherharp said is true re checking your local home improvement stores as compared to your pet stores.

I checked at my pet store for a flourescent FS tube and their price was $39 per tube! I checked at my home improvedment store and they were priced at $6.99 per tube! You know where I bought mine... not at the pet store. :D

I use both the full spectrum lights and the red infrared heat light.

I leave the RIHL on at all times.

Once I got the Bird House the way I wanted it and all of the Ladies settled in, I put one on the top of the flight cage. I have not lost any fledglins.

I feel the extra heat and night light is good for them. I also keep my Old Hags in the flight cage as trainers and the extra heat does them good too.
Happy Birding......<><
