storing large amounts of seed?

Post by tinysparrow » Mon Dec 26, 2011 8:56 pm

i was hoping i could get some forum member's ideas on storing large amounts of seed.

i recently started buying bulk seed from a farm store near my house. its amazing seed, but then i get it home and open the bag and it kind of sits around until i can use it. i put some of it into containers so i can use it daily...but the other seed bags are piling up and i'd like to organize them better.

how do you store your large quantities of seed? any best practices you can share would be greatly appreciated :D

thanks!

I keep my seed in drawers, the plastic ones, maybe you can use a plastic tote(s)

I don't know how large your amount is. But I also buy large bags and I use large dog food containers from the pet store to keep them in. They are sealed off that way and I don't buy more than twice a year or so, and my seed always stays fresh in there.

I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I only have to keep my basic seed mix on hand for two months, as my seed co-op orders every two months. For this, I use the dog food containers on wheels that are sold at Petsmart. They have a seal ring around the inside that is supposed to keep out bugs.

For seeds that I use less often, or seeds that have a high oil content (like niger), I transfer them to plastic containers and keep in the freezer. Walmart carries a rectangular container with blue lid, comes two to a package, for a bit more than $2. These stack well in the freezer.

I only buy 25 to 50lbs at a time and store it in camo buckets with lids that I get at Home Depot. I mix other things in with my seed (Zupreme, etc), but I mix that in a large pitcher when I am ready to use it.

I keep my 50 lb finch mix in a galvanized garbage can...Bug and rodent proof....My smaller bags of pellets, etc are stored in a large metal popcorn container, like they sell at Christmas time....

I place my seed in ziplock freezer bags...last forever and no bugs will hatch out :D Of course the cost of the freezer and electric cost negates the savings of buying in bulk...but for convienance you can't beat it :D I bought another freezer to have down at the store..the customers love the freshness of the seed I sell

I order 100 lb of seed at a time, and use the Vittle Vault sold at PetSmart:

It seals (as long as my petsitter puts the lids back on the darn things) and stacks, and each holds exactly 50 lb.

hi
i always bought mine in 56 pound bags, but i kept my finch seed and canary seed seperate by putting them in those deep stackable plastic boxes with lids some of the lids where hinged in the middle so all i did was slide the top one along and access the seed by opening one end of the lid for soaked seed and seperate small amounts of vitamin seeds you can buy 3 smaller ones that fit exactly across one big one and with them being stackable they all stood in one corner of my bird room

ken
you can always tell a yorkshireman, but you cant tell him much
