Years ago, we used to have one in our bedroom, and we had a canary in there too. That Ionic cleaner made the bird sick, and after a while we realized it was making us sick too. Really dislike the darn things.

I have one in my bird room, and don't think I have had any problem with it, at least I can't pinpoint it as the cause of any deaths I have had. Since I have 18 cages in a small room, I put the air cleaner in, and it does seem to help with air quality. I got one that had filters at first, but then realized that with the expense of the filters, I could buy the more expensive filterless one. I also have a humidifier in there, since breeding birds need a higher humidity, and the small space heater in there really dries out the air.

I now also have birds in my second bedroom, and I don't use an air cleaner or humidifier in there, and I don't notice any problem with the air quality. My problem in the bird room is that there are so many birds in such a small room. I don't know if you would need an air cleaner for just a few birds.

I've heard that cockatiels have a dander that many people are allergic to. Since I only have finches, I don't have that severe a problem. I didn't even use the air cleaner that takes filters, returned it and got the filterless one, so I can't compare them for an odor. My sister-in-law tells me my smeller doesn't work very well, though, so maybe there is an odor and I just don't get it!

Actually, the odor you smell with the ionic ones, is ozone.

I recently was informed the IONICS cause respatory problems in birds and humans as well as permanate lung damage in people so now im like freaking out,lol

Another bird group i am on has been discussing them and 90% say they are all bad, A few say Hepas are ok,
