Which type of finches do I have here?

Post by fhratul » Fri Jan 06, 2012 10:39 am

I was so sure they were European Green Finch, but got confused by the black spots on their chest and near wings, looks like baby star finches, again not sure #-o Mind ID them for me?

The specks do resemble star chicks but they sure are greenish.... Could they possibly be hybrids? What else do you have in your aviary?

Hybrids... possible, I bought them from a local shop, I don't have any other birds, these two are my first :) And the green color in the picture is not absolutely what they look like, I still think they are baby star chicks, but could be hybrids as well.

Anyone else?

Definitely not Star finches. Here is a photo of my YF Star and her babies. Note the different shape of the beak, and the legs are light on Stars, your finches have dark legs.

To me it looks like a Spice hybrid but the other half I am unsure of.
This is efinch.com, take a look at the 6o day old chick at the bottom

looks kind of like it

http://www.efinch.com/species/spice.htm the back and head color does not look as brown to be a full Spice and the throat and chest are to yellow.

They do look a bit like twinspot but do keep in mind the shape and color of the beak. Very.. spice finch. especially with the color of the beak. i am almost positive that it is a hybrid or a REALLY weird mutation. or heck, it could even just be that the feathers have not fully come in?

IMO they are much too yellow to be spice finches. And what's with the red cheek patch on one of them?

My guess is also hybrid unless it's a rare munia type... Interesting though and pretty!

it does look a bit like the scaly breasted munia or moluccan... not dark enough though.. jmo
i have always admired the munia because certain mutations look a bit like a bald eagle..i LOVE eagles!

You really need more natural lighted pictures. that could clear things up a bit

thinking the same thing..
(cheek patch)

they deffinatly have spice or some mannikin in them, maybe twinspot or some other species, IMO, they may be some rare munias or something. Hmmm
