sinus infection

Post by 6finchfriends » Sat Jan 07, 2012 4:24 pm

I know blue factor Gouldians are susceptible to sinus infections and this morning my BF is showing signs of swelling around the eye, mostly on top, and redness. Unfortunately he and his mate are breeding, though they have yet to lay any eggs. My question is- can I give them both amoxicillin or will I need to separate him in a hospital cage? I have located the amoxcillin in a neighboring town and am getting ready to go now. Any reply will be appreciated!

Trish, it is better to check with ladygouldian, a broad spectrum antibiotic might be a better choice for sinus and eyes infections. She can tell you what is best and if something other than amoxitex is needed. One of the medical guides I use recommends a broad spectrum.

I have used a combination of Ronex and amoxitex on a pair with young based on the recommendation of Joanne at ladygouldian.com.

I believe so but since the pair have chicks it is best to ask.

ladygouldian.com phone Toll Free: 800.579.7974

It says that it should not be given to chicks while being fed...here is the page

I have used a combination of Ronex and amoxitex on a pair with young based on the recommendation of Joanne at ladygouldian.com.
Just thought I should point at that Joanne is at ladygouldianfinch.com and Laraine is at ladygouldian.com . They are two different sites in two different states, California and Georgia.

I am in Florida and have used Joanne when I could not reach Laraine. Joanne was very helpful as well. I think they merged the two businesses, not sure.

this site has the 770-939-4531 (Georgia) phone number and is titled Laraine's Lady Gouldian (I have reached Joanne at this number a few times, she must pick up calls if Laraine can not)

From what I understand they used to be partners on ladygouldianfinch but split and that's when Laraine started ladygouldian. The finch niche is now partnered with ladygouldianfinch and joanne. I don't find Laraines articles on ladygouldianfinch any more and neither have a link to the other. Not sure we should give the impression that they are one and the same.

I called the one number for Georgia and got Joanne several months ago. All I know is that she was very helpful. I am not assuming they are the same. Perhaps Joanne was covering calls for the Georgia number...who knows, All I know is I called, Joanne answered and even called me back.

I've given him amoxicillin and Ronex and will treat him and his mate for 10 days. After two days the swelling on one side of his head has gone down! That was the side that wasn't as swollen to begin with. I waited for him to poo so I could check it and it's normal. Normal shape and color. He's eating like normal, and still singing and breeding with his hen. There isn't any nasal discharge, sneezing or gummy eyes. He's still bright eyed and active. The only thing I've noticed is he spends quiet a bit of time in the nest box. (no eggs in there) I'm wondering if the lights are hurting his eyes. I hope he gets better. This is breaking my heart. Thanks for your concern and advice!

By the way, if you don't have a heat lamp on one side near a perch, add one it may make him feel better.
