Mixing differant finch species
In my new avairy which will be 18 x 12 ft with a 6x5 shelter, i intend to keep ,a colony of each, 3 pairs diamond firetails and 3 pairs shafts [yellow beaked], i am also interested in Gouldians, Stars, Owls, Pearl headed silverbills, looking for perhaps another 4 pairs in total, has anybody kept these mixed together before? Should i have another colony of one kind only or individual pairs? Many thanks, Gaz.

I am currently housing gouldians, owls, stars, shafttails, pearl-headed silverbills, and diamond doves together. They get along without any problems, you should be fine with those. Diamond firetails, on the other hand... I've heard they can be quite aggressive and should only be kept with other more aggressive species.

they should be fine together, but u may run into problems when a pair is breeding. some aggressive may occur. sometime a pair may stop feeding new fledglings in a mix colony due to it feeling threaten by other birds around. good luck.

I keep gouldians, double bars (owls),stars, jacarinis and orange breasted waxbills together without any problem. Gouldians and owles can be kept in colonies. Diamond firetails can be sometimes somewhat aggressive at breeding time particularly but so can stars on occassion although they usually settle down. I wouldnt keep yellow and red headed stars together.gaz wrote:In my new avairy which will be 18 x 12 ft with a 6x5 shelter, i intend to keep ,a colony of each, 3 pairs diamond firetails and 3 pairs shafts [yellow beaked], i am also interested in Gouldians, Stars, Owls, Pearl headed silverbills, looking for perhaps another 4 pairs in total, has anybody kept these mixed together before?
