At what age do male societies sing?

Post by Sharona » Wed Jan 11, 2012 2:04 am

Hello to all! I'm a new member. I've have birds in the past but it's been years. I'm completely new to society finches so I have a question.

We purchased two finches about 10 days ago and last Saturday both my husband and I could swear we heard a song coming from the birds but neither of us were in the room to observe anything. I've read alot on the site here and realize males normally dance and fluff. We've seen none of that so I'm assuming we have females but is there a chance that these are young birds and if one of them is a male he just hasn't started singing yet?

I'd appreciate any input. thanks!

My society finches start singing from about 9 months. you have to keep in mind that some males will not sing in the presence of other males. I have one male constantly on the singing and courting scene. As soon as I separate him for nesting and breeding the other male will start up.
After the breeding season when I return the breeding pair the second male becomes silent after being chased for a number of laps round the aviary.

My first society male started singing when he was younger than 4 months  he is like 6 months old now - but he doesn't sing as good as the older males :D

My pair is relatively young, that is what the breeder told me, they're too young to even breed but I heard the male sing. Try seperating them, the hens should call, males will sing.

Thank you all for your replies. My husband swears he has heard him sing every morning but I haven't heard him since that first time. Hubbie is an early riser and I more of a night person. He says as soon as he turns on the UV full spectrum lighting in the morning Captain sings! I told him to wake me up before he turns it on tomorrow! We shall see!
