Indigo finches

Post by AngieCort68 » Wed Jan 25, 2012 8:00 am

I guess the little one who I thought was shy and scared is a tough cookie after all. He will not allow the other on HIS perch. Jikes. I hope they don't get too territorial. They are beautiful but if I can't blend them with another of my species I may have to try to trade them. Does anyone going to the April show in Orlando do trades? I would trade them for a pair of owls. I don't have a lot of cage space so I have to be able to blend them once they are out of quarantine. I learned my lesson about researching a species before purchasing. When I purchased the Indigos I asked them if they got along fine with other finches and she said yes. Ours are with other species. They never mentioned they were territorial at all. I learned that from you all and now I can see it. I learned too that the sellers aren't always honest. Shame on me. Lessons learned. I will be better prepared for the April show thanks to my forum friends. =D> Thanks in advance.

Usually with the shows they do not like you to bring birds in with you unless you are trading with someone and plans were made before hand. What I would do is call the breeder you got them from, tell them they can not be blended into the avairy and ask if you could trade them back and as what they have available.

In the mean time since they are aggressive I would place them in a separate cage especially if they are in quarantine with other birds. You don't want the other stressed in quarantine.

Yes, Angie, not all vendors are honest, even at a bird mart. Most are, and will tell you if a species is compatible, or if they are siblings, etc., but there are always the ones who only want to sell their birds, so they tell you anything in order to get you to buy. After a while, you get to know the vendors, so you know which ones you can trust. I think many of us got burned a time or two when we first started with finches.

I've told the story before of a vendor in Ft. Worth that told me his pair of BCCB would get along fine in the same cage with my pair of BCCB. And I didn't even know enough to quarantine then, so I brought the pair home and put them right into the cage with my pair--almost instant fighting!

Ashame he has turned into a bully. I would take them to sell from the store but I don't have owls.... Probably best to see if the vendor would trade...though I hate to see them go back there... plus I would be leary of doing business with someone that already mislead you :?
Glad you learned to do your research before you buy :D
They sure are a beautiful pair :!:

@Candace I contacted the breeder and now after reading your post you got me thinking. I may not want to do more business with them EVER and maybe I shouldn't send these cuties back to them. I have some thinking to do. I just want them to live a happy life and now I feel so guilty for not doing my research even when the hubby told me to wait. I was so excited at the show I wasn't thinking straight and trusted too easily.

Angie... I sure didn't mean to make you feel guilty. I was thinking of maybe you could try to sell them locally or through a bird board instead of dealing with them. PM me if you would about the price you would need for them and who you bought them from. If possible I may be able to help you out when I come to the fair.....

Angie, some of the breeder brokers often get a shipment of species in for a good price without really knowing to much about the species and pass on incorrect information just for a better way of putting it "making a quick buck" or not taking the time to get the correct information on the species to pass onto the buyer.

I may know of a few people over here that come to the shows that might be interested...these are two boys or a pair? I assume by the names they are males. I was interested in them when I first saw them about a yr or so ago at one of the smaller fairs near me. If this is a pair let me know.

I need to move out some owl offspring, zebras of various mutataions before I can add other birds.

Cindy, she wanted to trade owls for them so that may work great if you two can make a swap. That way the birds would get a great home and Angie wouldn't have to deal with an unscrupolous or uninformed vendor :D
It's great when finch people can come through for one another :D

I almost made a similar mistake.
I was looking at some beautiful Orange Weavers and Yellow Weavers.
But something in the back of my head said NO, go home and read about them FIRST. When I got home and read about them, I was glad I did not buy them. The Orange Weaver is in the 'aggressive' category.

@Candace, you didn't make me feel guilty. I felt that way because I should've gone home and researched before buying like Gary did. But I will research now. :D

@Cindy, I think they are both males. I'm not sure. One has the dark blue color and the other one has brown and the blue. I've read the females have more brown than the males but I'm not sure if this one is still young and hasn't colored out. I thought they were both boys but with the lie the seller told me I don't think she even knew what they were. :^o I am willing to trade for owls. I am also looking for blue capped Cordon Bleus. I am willing to pay if there is a difference in price too.

Thanks you all are so great. I am proud to be a part of this forum. You all remind me that there are still nice people in this world. =D>

There are many nice people! Just gotta avoid those brokers. They do anything to make money of poor little birds.

Angie, on your phone do you have web browsing...if so pull up the forum and bookmark it, you can also post right from your phone. If ever in doubt snap a picture and post it with a question on the forum...you can even pull up the Species on the FIC. I may go to the one in April it depends on a few things here. It would be fun to get a few of us from the forum together at the show.

@Cindy, that's a great idea. I do have web on my phone and I will do that. I am attending the April show and would love to meet some of the forum members. Maybe we can start a thread when the date is closer.
