african violets for GS

Post by kathmcm » Thu Jan 26, 2012 12:11 pm

Last month I picked up a few inexpensive little african violets at Home Depot and put one of them in the flight with my GS pair. Within a week it was totally eaten! The plant is sturdy enough to support their weight, and they love the thick juicy leaves. This morning I put another plant in and watched as the hen plucked a flower off and took it to her perch for breakfast, only to have the male come over and get in a tugging match with her over it.

Combination green food, flight decor, exercise, and entertainment for you and your birds! Maybe will work for non-African finches as well.

Yeah it's one of the flower plants that African birds eat. There is a list somewhere I'll post a link if I can find it. I am never quite sure if the store plants had been sprayed? I've gotten into gardening in a big way, for the pesky GS.

Yes, I had seen african violets described as bird safe too.

They are actually quite easy to propage yourself by cutting off a leaf from an existing plant, so if you do that it won't be necessary to worry about chemicals.

BTW those who know GS know that the male could have gotten his own flower much easier than trying to take the hen's, and it all ended with the flower falling to the floor of the flight, where GS dare not go. :?
