Gouldian Just not looking right or stuck in Molt?

the instruction say mix 10 g with one litre of drinking water. So my questions are since only one bird is needing or receiving meds then should i still make it up like the instructions? This medication is Vetafarm Amtyl.

I will wait to hear advise on giving it to him or not and also the amount that is usally given regards to one bird.

If he's acting very normal I would just give probiotics in the drinking water. I really think there is too much use of antibiotics and the probiotics will help him in a time of stress. Stress causes a change in the stool consistency

p.s. There is no harm in giving the probiotics to the other goulds also as it contains benefitial bacteria for their guts as well.

However if you are really inclined to use the antibiotics than follow thru with the entire course and make sure you dose correctly. Frankly speaking I wouldn't make a litre I would just make enough for the bird in a day say 100-200ml therefore you would need 1-2gms of the Amtyl.

The antibiotic may degrade if you make a large batch at once and spread it over a few days of use.

I would add that if you do decide to use the antibiotic, be sure to follow up with a probiotic to restore its gut to normal.

I dont' have any probiotic at the momment so I guess I will wait until I have received it to give the antibiotic.

The poop looks more like a clay colour or plaster colour. The other three birds they all have same colour and texture.

K&M,

I had a gouldian that had watery poop but was perfectly well looking. I was so tempted to use an antibiotic on her but finally decided not to. She was later paired up to a male and when she started to lay eggs the poop finally went back to normal. Who knows perhaps she was stressed or just wanting to mate with someone. Anyways I'm so glad that I waited it out.

chrischris....I am glad you mentioned about your Gouldian as my female was showing the same watery poops about the time her beak turned black....it must have also been a breeding mode thing for her too as she is fine now!

Since mine is a male and I do know that the poop has not been this watery before just in the last few weeks, hence the reason to place him by himself.
Could this do with him stuck in molt?

I've heard this term stuck in a molt many times and I assume that the gould is molting but just taking a very long time to get out of one. Are you still finding feathers on the bottom of the cage or is it just that your bird doesn't look feathered in?

Well he has a lot of pin feathers still his face that is supose to be all black is about 40% black and the rest a grey colour. He's feathers are not as tight to his body as the other gouldians and there are still a lot of feathers all over the bottom of the cage and floor. He is 8 months old and the female that is 7 months has everything in and looks the same as my other goulds.

I should be receiving my order soon for the feather up. Will it be alright to give him feather up and probotic? or should I just give the feather up to see if that helps with his watery poops as well?

If you see pin feathers he's in a molt.

No problem with feather up and probiotics they can be added in the water together.

It's a bit unusual for a gould to go into a molt now unless your house is just so warm for it or you are decreasing the daylight hours for it.

The male was finishing up his molt when we bought him over two months ago....same as the female. She finished up within a week or so just like the breeder said but the male very slow. He still has pin feathers on his head and like I said the feathers are just not laying flat along his body. The back in his face has changed very little since we bought him.
The products should be here any day now so I will wait and give them both to him.

Hi Everyone
sorry it has taken a while to make an up date but I have had a busy month with work and family. Here is an up date.
Our male is doing much better. He is still coming through the molt but looking brighter and more active. His poop is still a little watery but you can at least see the difference colours within the poop. He was on antibotic for 6 days and now almost done the probotic. I have also added the feather up to his food to help with the molt. He is flying much better and has lost some weight as well. He loved being on his own in the hospital cage but today he is back in the larger cage with the other three and is doing alright. I think he liked being on his own....

How long should I keep him on the probotic?
