They look great, great picture. I love shaft tails, they are rather comical!

Especially once you imagine the beak as a nose and the black throat patch as a large open mouth.

Excuse my ignorance, but do the males have red beaks like zebra finches? I noticed one has an orange beak

All three of these have red beaks, although the one on the left has a slight yellow tint. There may have been some inbreeding further up in the family tree.

In General you get 2 subspecies. The one with the yello beak is the nominate race whereas the red-beaked finches are of the hecki sub specie and that is why they are also called Heck's Grassfinches.

I have a fawn as well.

I have ones that when the young were born the beaks were a pearl flesh tone and remained light, I also have the orange beaks. Yellow beak is a bit harder to come by.

I love this site and have been corresponding with them in regards to my shaft tails. The pearl pink beaks apparently are seen more in Europe than here. My male (the father had an orange beak and the mom had a red beak) You can have females with red or orange beaks. The pearl pink tone is a male. The males beak darkens as well as the females during breeding.
