new birds + a banding mess up

Post by ac12 » Sun Jan 29, 2012 7:31 pm

I picked up 4 birds today at the birdmart.
1 RH-WB-YB male.
1 OB-OC zebra male, the OBs are sooo hard to find. After seeing the thread about the all orange zebra. I decided to try and see if I could get close to duplicating it. His future mate is a BF hen.
2 society hens (I hope both are hens), to be my emergency fosters.

I got home and banded them.
When I went to record it...something didn't look right.
DRAT x4 !!!!
I put 2010 bands on them when it should have been 2011 bands.
I had to remove the 2010 bands from all 4 birds and put the correct 2011 bands on them. Removing bands is so much harder than putting them on. I'm afraid to hurt their leg trying to get the tool under the band.

Luckily the last digit of the numbers were the same, so I did not also have to change bands on the right leg.

Where do you get split bands with the date? I thought only closed bands had dates on them. That is helpful to know.

Deborah,
I get my bands from Red Bird.
By year bands, I follow the NFSS color scheme;
2010 = black,
2011 = light blue,
2012 = purple.

My bands are numbered.
Then on the right leg, I use a band color that corresponds to the last digit on the band, example 7 = purple. That way I don't have to try to read the band to know which bird I am dealing with. I just look at the band color on the right leg.

Gary,
Your male OC/OB is almost exactly the same as my male, only I think mine is split to BB (he's got dark brown feathers on his breast) I have him paired with a BB female.

The breeder said he mated an Orange Breast (OB) with a Black Cheek (BC) to get the Orange Cheek (OC).

The next step is to mate him with a Black Face (which I have), then mate the daughter with the least white on the top of her heat back to the father to get the head orange.

Found it, this is the bird I want to try to duplicate:

All zebras have orange cheeks. He is OB BB possibly isabel, that is why he has cheek extensions and elongated flanks, the breeder is a bit off.

hmmmm
You're right, I was just caught up looking at the orange and the lack of black on it. Oh well, it will be interesting to see what comes out of mating him w my BF.

Gary! If you breed him to a bf you will get OB BB BF! That is what Vargur's bird Almos is. An all red bird. You may also get phaeo, because he is Florida Fancy or isabel ob bb. Good luck!!!

Looks like only OB to me, could be bb or split.
and he is Isabel, Very pretty!
But Dante is right, there is nothing called OC,
in the Zebra finch world.
Only FC, GC and BC. :)

GRRRRRRR :evil:

I just heard one of my societies singing!!!!
They were SUPPOSED to be 2 hens.
So far, this breeder has been wrong 4 out of 6 times. Pretty bad odds from someone who claims to be able to sex them.
I shoulda bought 3 societies, to give me 1 spare for just this problem.
I don't look forward to driving 25 miles (one way) just to exchange birds.

Well I guess my lone male has his new partner.
And I'm going to have to get another hen.

maybe if you let them sit on eggs, they can still foster. esp with both a male and female :)
