I found the pellets in the seed mix a huge waste, none of mine will eat it, it is generally to hard and stale. It is better to buy a 10 pound bag like Zupreem fruit blends and mix it in the seed yourself. Typical can order from foryoubird.com or for larger orders bulkbirdfood.com. Both sites are owned by the same company and carry KayTee pellets and seed as well as other companies.

Buttons can't live on seed alone. They need gamebird crumbles that are high in protein additional to seed, greens and veggies. A single button would also be rather lonely, they need to live in pairs to be happy. Please don't get a button just to eat unwanted seeds! [-X

I was going to get one and my brother would get it a friend. It would have a varied diet, and I have wanted one before my finches. Don't worry. :)

New problem! Now they ignore all other seed besides their prosso now!

Comment about the buttons - I agree about getting more than one. But just wait until you meet these little guys - they are wonderful! So much energy and personality in such tiny packages!

I used to raise them and was so crazy about them I even kept some in a converted aquarium in my living room! :D

Dante, the seed they are ignoring is it the wild bird food?

Go to bulkbirdfood.com....order some pellets and some seed, they do large quanities mix that up and when Nancy gets her website up have her send you some of her seed mix, mix it in.

I would look for a seed mix that had no fortified color spray on the seeds, does not have pellets in it, I use to use Kaytee Supreme for finches but not use just brown top, japanese, canary, Germain Foxtail millet and pellets

Another place to order seed from is Herman Bros. They carry seed for almost every type of bird. As well foods for other animals

http://www.hermanbros-seed.com/

you can buy mixes or individual seeds to blend your way or they make you a blend depending on what your birds like.

Stay away from adding lettuce and rape seed none of mine ate it.

They have a huge selection....look at what the they eat the most in your finch mix and go from there.

@Dante
Go to the FIC and check out the nutrition section, then new foods.
http://www.finchinfo.com/diet/introducing_new_foods.php
That is essentially the method that I used to convert my birds from seeds to pellets.

I remove the seeds just before lights out and put out the pellets.
In the morning I leave ONLY the pellets.
I time how long only the pellets is out.
For 5 days, after 1 hr I put their seeds back.
For the next 5 days, I wait 2 hours then put their seeds back.
For the next 5 days, I wait 3 hours then put their seeds back.
For the next 5 days, I wait 4 hours then put their seeds back.

They are eating pellets by the time I get to 4 hours.
Obviously you cannot do this particular method if you are not home to put the seeds back after the specified time.

One warning, you MUST be careful not to starve the birds. Some birds could be STUBBORN and refuse to eat anything other than what they want to eat. So keep an eye on them.

It will help if at least one bird breaks down early and eats pellets, as that will help get the others to start eating the pellets "monkey see, monkey do."

To be honest with you in regards to pellets, my birds all relish these. If I put seed in a bowl and a scoop of pellets off to the side in the seed they all go to the pellets first. Zebras especially. If you are going to convert completely over to pellets, it is better for them but can get costly with a large quanity of birds. It is also a gradual thing like Gary wrote and the site on Roudybush that explains conversion. Finches do well with a mix of seed and pellets, they have a much faster metabolism.

My lovebirds and parrotlets and my gray all had pellets only.

You will be able to tell if they are eating it, there will be a powder in the bottom of the dish. The left over powder from each dish can be mixed into the bird the dish belongs to eggfood for the day.

Cindy
What else do you do with the powdered pellets?
The birds make the powder but don't seem to eat it.
I feel that it is going to be a waste like the seeds in a seed mix that they don't eat.

I did mix the powdered dry egg food w the fresh veggies that I feed my wife's canary. And he ate it, so it did not go to waste.

But the zebras only get egg+veggies 2x a week if they are not breeding. Well I suppose I could give them veggies every day like the canary.
