RCCB Got a Chill

Post by BigBear0007 » Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:26 am

It got a little colder in the bird room last night!
As it was 16C or about 60 degrees, when I came down, which the birds can handle when they are high up.

Well my male RCCB was at one of the food dishes and looked cold, I got him to fly up to the higher perches but he was all puffed up!
His blood core temperature must have been low and he was having trouble breathing! I have him in a small cage and a heat lamp.

Fingers crossed!

Hope he warms up for you Jerry. Hope he will be alright. Keep us posted. Do you have a heater that is set to go on at a certain temperature? Or do you turn it on as needed?

I usually have the heat in the house set to go on at 68, last night the temps dropped more than we thought and the temp in the room was 67...I got a bit nervous (I know 1 degree) but you know how it is will these finches, some are tough others like the owls are more sensitive.

It has a sensor and it comes on as needed. But he was low at the food dish and must have fell asleep when the lights went off and it was enough to give him a chill!

Now, the canaries love it when it's cooler in the room!
They are actually more active !

The hen is calling for him!

He seems to be on the mend!
Eating, and flying around.
I made some fresh egg food for everyone,
that should pick him up!

I try to keep the aviary at least at 70 but also had it drop to 65 sometimes when I forgot to turn the heater on high during the night or didn't know that it would be that cold... I think just once shouldn't hurt him as long as he's otherwise healthy.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I've had the same problem at times, but my rccb's and owls are on top of the flight cages, so they're higher up. Still, I have a heater in the bird room and turn it on at night to help with the chill. Some of my finches are still fluffed when the room is 70-74 degrees and only warm up at 75 plus.

Very sorry to hear that! It is no fun to buy a new bird and have it be so short lived. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself as perhaps it was already incubating an illness . I have never had rccb however I have a friend who lost her female recently and similiar symptoms, was fine went puffy..then gone. Her male since started showing a dirty vent and puffy she took him to vet and is waiting on relsults of the gram stain, however the ivermectin and baytril seem to be effective as he has started singing anf looking better.

I am taking the corpse to the shop I bought him from!
They only give a 2 week guarantee, but I have been dealing with them for over ten years!
I hope they replace him or give a credit for another RCCB when they have more?
I have bought and sold birds and never had problems before!
I will let you know what happens!
