New Javas

Post by ldupuis44 » Mon Jan 30, 2012 7:18 pm

So excited!
I just got 3 new javas. I am pretty certain I have one male and one female, however the third one I am not certain about. I think it is a hen, but it's beak almost has a ridge. It is either a hen or an immature male...I think.

They are such neat little birds. They have big ole cage all to themselves and they love it.

Congratulations!!! If you post a picture many of us have had or have javas and perhaps we can help you id the sex of the one bird. If yo can get a profile spot, a pic looking down at the top of her head and beak and one of the underside of the lower beak that would help.

I will try. They are quarantined right now and seem very touchy. Almost all finches don't like to be handled, but these seem especially unhappy with being held. I wonder if their previous owner wasn't very good to them (got them from the shelter). I'm sure they will come around though :)

Yes, I rescued them. I've separated the for sure male into his own cage away from the other two. The certain male, I call him Puffer, sings pretty regularly. The two in the other cage that I think are females, neither of them have been singing at all. I'm really hoping that I have two females. Two of them are banded blue and one isn't banded at all.

The blue bands have identification number (one is a 24, the other 06). With both bands being blue, do you think these two are related? The shelter said that the birds were all recovered individual cages and no one looked like they were from the same clutch, and all of them are about the same age, just finished their first molt. I hope they are not related. I would like to breed them.

To me they don't seem related. The male is almost completely normal in color with a few white spots on the back of his head. The girl is also almost all normal color, but she has a little white. These are the two with blue bands. The third female looks very different! She is very light in color with a grey head and lots of white speckles (I call her speck) and black tail feathers. She is not banded.

well I would say there is a chance the blue bands are related.. maybe you can pair up the non banded bird with one of the blue bands if you want to breed them if the sexes of them work out.

Here are the photos. Sorry about the crooked photos...they are not crooked on my computer or on photobucket...and they are smaller on photobucket, so I don't know what the issue is.

Well, I have three, and they seem very happy. I may get one more, but I really don't feel they need it. I have them in a 30" x46"x30" .. it is a very strange sized cage, but the birds love it. They love fresh lettuce and Higgins Song Seed mix.

They have the cutest song. My husband says it sounds like laser guns :P. My husband really likes them

Hahaha lasergun-song sounds awesome ^_^ My cage is 52 inches from top to bottom, and the bottom plate is 32 x 32 inches! I would love to have javas but im afraid that my cage is too small, so im looking into shaftails/grassfinches now :^o

They are very cute!

Years ago, my mom had a Java finch, given to her by my uncle for a birthday present. I always loved the way they looked.

I wish I could have some now...but really am lacking in the space dept! One day ;)

That cage sounds like it's about the same size as what i have for my three. I think it would be fine for 3 javas. Mine seem very happy in the 46" tall cage that is 30x30 in the bottom plate. I always see them perching together and they talk through the bars to my societies.
