Gouldian inheritance (colors) + breeding behavior

Post by finchandlovebird » Sun Jan 29, 2012 4:52 pm

I have 2 new Goulds from a friend, currently in a quarantine cage. Today I saw the male BH.WB.BB "displaying" to the other bird. I had been thinking the "other bird" could be a male because it is getting two long thin tail feathers. Clue me in.
Photos to show.
This (white headed) yellow female's parents were Mom BH.PB.GB and Dad RH.PB.GB; I also have a sister to this (white headed)yellow & she is YH.PB (lavender).YB. I would guess the parents are split to split to split, etc. LOL
Here are the photos; pardon the male, he is moulting.

Nice birds!

Your "white headed" is actually genetically "black headed". Black is expressed as white/grey on yellow backs and dilutes.

When describing bird colors the nomenclature is usually H,C,B Head, Chest, Back. I know you meant "B" for Breast, but that could confuse some folks like me.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve, around here it's most always said as Breast, C confuses me! LOL

Going by what you've said it sounds to me like your calling this yellow bird recessive are you sure both it's parents we're green back??

Yeah I totally missed the parentage.. you can't get a yellow from two normals. :-k
Maybe the father was actually dilute?

Tiffany; I will check with the gal who I got the yellows from; actually, she's on this list now; maybe she'll see this post & chime in.

Found out the dad to my two yellow hens is a dilute !!

So, how does this compute when describing him: RH.PB.Dilute. what's the nomenclature for "dilute"?

The mom is BH.PB.GB

So what do I call the two yellow daughters?
One is OH.PB.YB
One is "white head". "Lavendar breast". Yellow back

A dilute is genetically a Single Factor Yellow (SFYb) so RH.PB.SFYb
The daughters are yellow the "white head" is a Black Head genetically. Because the yellow gene prevents the color black to show they have a visually white head. Purple breast hens normally have a light purple or lavender color breast, or are you saying it's a Lilac Breast which would be a very pale purple almost pink color, then it would be LB. so YH.PB.Yb and BH.LB.Yb
