I'm new to Javas, but I definitely have 1 male and 2 females. My male sings and my husband says he sounds like a laser gun (R2D2 from star wars is very similar too).

Of my hens, one makes a whirring sound, like a computer starting up when the male sings or when the finches are singing. My other female beeps but she is mostly silent. I'm waiting a few more days before pairing up my male (Puffer) with the whirring female (Speck). I think Queen Bee (the quiet female) and Puffer might be related. I rescued them form a shelter and Puffer and Queen Bee both have blue numbered bands.

Thanks and the same to you Dee!
I simply love their personalities. Queen Bee is definitely the dominant female where as speck is more demure (even though she makes more noise).

Speck and Puffer's cages are near each other, and I can tell they are bonding. They both sit where they can see each other and will 'talk' back and forth. I'll be putting them into a large breeding cage tomorrow...I'm hoping for quick baby making :)

Good luck, let us know what happens :)

Thank you Rancel and Dante. They are so cute. They are in quarantine right now, in a smaller budgie cage. Forgot how big they are...IM going to have to go out and buy a large cage for them when quaratine is finished.

I hear a noise from the red banded `female` ...its like a bleep bleep bleep.
The unbanded one has made this sound on occasion as well. But yesturday I heard the R2D2 sound...ugh I have no idea what they are! I hope its not to females #-o I will be listening closely for any sounds. Other than what they are making now lol....

Dee if you can take a profile picture of the beak to beak, facing each other we might be able to help you figure it out.

Ok I will Cindy.
My husband got off early today, so Im gonna try and get him to take a pic while I hold them ;)
I will get one side profile shot, and one from above, maybe from underneath their beak we will see. I hope there is still a way to determine the sex, if the unbanded could be a young male?

Everyone take a look at the pics and let me know your thoughts.

Dee, is you are still unsure, take your pictures and compare them to this site...especially the underside of the lower beak. There are slight differences. From your pictures of the underside of the lower beak notice the thickness in the v shaped part of the underside of the beak...males is thicker. The female is thinner.

Congratulations....they will settle in soon and you should hear more singing.

You guys are the experts...lol to me they look like twins. I dont see any differences in their beaks, top view/side/underside...Maybe Im blind.

I havent heard any male singing. If one is a male, how long till hes in breeding condition? To notice bulbing, and singing. Or do I have to GET him into condition, with change of diet etc?

Dee, the site I gave you on javas is pretty good, jammed full of facts and help.

This is the section on breeding, extremely helpful.
http://www.javafinch.com/breeding/breedndx.html

He gives tips on special eggfoods and how to get them into good conditon.

Thx Cindy. Ive read this a few times, but I didnt see anything that says when they come into breeding condition...other than the diet to get them ready to breed. #-o
They say female has to be about a year to breed...but the male? when does his beak change? 1 yr old?

I really need a bigger cage for them asap, this little budgie cage they are in is so small atm. Maybe once that happens, I can hear someone sing! I will need to know soon, because if they are both females, then I have to bring it back to swap one out for a male.

Both you and Candace, say they are M/F but a picture could always lie, because in some shots one of their heads is slightly tilted which could make profile shapes look a bit different...just like when a person poses at different angles. Not always reliable, unless an expert is here in my home! lmao

I'll just be quiet now  no point in driving myself crazy on what sex they are...Just need to give it some time
