oyster shell and cuttle bone

Post by Rour » Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:38 pm

Is it enough for calcium requirements to use egg shells and grated cuttle bone? What extra something does oyster shell have, and is it available in pet stores, unmixed with grit?

I grind the oystershell in a coffee grinder mix it with shaved cuttlebone and mineral block. I also offer cuttlebone whole.

You cn buy powdered oystershell from Bird Supply of NH.

I give cuttlebone whole as well.

You might want to check your seed too. The seed I give my birds (Nederlands Vitaseed Finch) already contains oyster shell.

The shell contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, especially several derivatives of calcium (calcium cardonate, calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate). Taken from the site: http://www.naturopathydigest.com/nutrit ... _shell.php

You can find oyster shell at any store that has poultry feed like Agway, Tractor Supply etc. It is commonly used as a calcium supplement for poultry.

Thanks Debbie, thats really helpful. Ill pick up some oyster shell for them this week. they do have their grit, which contains charcoal, shell, and minerals, but i always like to give them everything fresh and homemade whenever possible. commercial grit tends to have more gravel than anything else.

I got a box of crushed oyster shell at Petsmart (green box)

I ground it to a powder and added the shaved cuttlebone and mineral block to as well as a tiny bit of charcoal.
