I am breeding with these a few years already with 3 pairs in an aviary , with plenty space it doesn't give a problem !!
I agree with the black tail feathers but on occasion I have noticed on mine that these are not evident always in the younger males. I dont want to get into a debate on sexing as there are many different opinions on how to do this for various finch species. Mostly I listen to ANY point of view on this and most of the time will try anyone's suggestions., All I can say about sexing St Helenas (my own personal experience) is that I am presently housing and breeding 6 unrelated pairs plus another dozen or so in the free flight aviary.I have been breeding St Helenas for 15 years. When I have paired them up I have done so on the intensity of the rose color under the chest of what I believe to be males. Maybe luck, but I have never got it wrong yet. I am not trying to convince anyone else to use this method I have just provided it from what I personally do which seems to work with me.

Those look like Black-rumped (Red-eared) Waxbills, not Common (St. Helena's) Waxbills. They are often mistaken, but the FIC, under Species, shows the definite differences. The ad seems to be calling those birds both names, which is incorrect.wellingtoncdm wrote:Dante, These are available in my town:

I have some Common Waxbills, have never had any luck breeding them in a cage. They probably need an aviary.

I agree with Cindy, these are Black-rumped waxbills.

I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Yes!
it is so true, I should not be allowed in petstores, birdmarts, on this website, google, because I cannot look at a new bird without wanting it!! I think I am growing very fond of waxbills now. I want to get a few species for the aviary, my little guys are in breeding mode, and I tried mini mealworms again, I should really go check if they ate them
