Mixing egg food and greens?
I love this forum - love sitting down and reading up on the different topics at the end of the day lol
Ok, I have a question: I prepare fresh food (greens, carrots, corn, etc. and egg food) for my birds every day. Do you ever mix the two or keep them separate? My canaries, societies, and zebras gobble it regardless if it's mixed or separated. My waxbills rarely peck at it, my gouldians so-so.

Two gouldians, two gold breast waxbills, two societies, four zebras, two canaries, one hamster, one freshwater fish tank, one salt water fish tank.

I keep them separated.

I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Re: Mixing egg food and greens?
I got tired of separate veggies.
So when I chop the veggies, I put it all into one plastic tub, that I scoop out when I feed them.
The red factor canary needs more "red" veggies, so I really should give him extra red veggies. But I deal with that by sprinkling paprika on his veggies.

I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do but I'm sure my Goulds weren't eating the egg food with the grated carrot and broccoli in it so for the last couple of days I have mixed this mixture with their seed and so far it looks like they are having a bit of everything. They are still eating bits of egg shell, grit and charcoal separately. Fingers crossed!!

Re: Mixing egg food and greens?
I do both...in my eggfood I put chopped kale, brocolli, and carrots. A food processor makes them pefect size for small birds. I will add that veggie mix to my eggfood.I do make batches without veggies for hatchlings less than week old. Alot of stuff I read says no greens under 5 days....I am not sure wether greens is kale, lettuce, etc ...or all veggies ,so I keep some veggie free.

Re: Mixing egg food and greens?
The only birds that will eat egg food with greens/veggies in it is my Parrotlets. I usually just make my egg food (dry egg food, couple boiled eggs +shell) and give it to the birds in a dish. I have a seperate dish with green/veggies that they can pick at right next to the other dish.

Hi Dee,
So far I have only tried dried egg food so think I will have a go with the boiled egg/shell combo. Reading anoter discussion, some people put mini mealworms in with the egg as an extra treat.

Yea, you can try a small batch at first, see how they like it. Just boil 1 egg for 15 mins. Let it cool, then put the egg shell in microwave for a min or so. Then it can be easily broken into tiny pieces.skyjump100 wrote:Hi Dee,

Use a fork to crumble your egg, add the shell, and some of your dry egg food. Mix till its like a dry bread crumb texture. I also add a little bit of cornmeal if its too wet.
To get them to eat it if its their first time, you can put a tiny bit of their seed on top. (be sure to remove their regular food out of the cage so egg food is the only food in there for a few hrs). Good luck

Re: Mixing egg food and greens?
Oops I did not read the original post carefully.
I do put fresh egg food and veggies together in the same bowl. However I don't always MIX it up together.
Usually I put a spoon of veggies, then a spoon or 2 of egg on the side of the veggies. Then depending on the birds, I will spread out the food so it is more accessible to more birds than in a pile where only a few can get to it. Then I sprinkle some crushed egg shell onto it. More egg shells for the breeding birds.
For some, I will sprinkle seeds on the egg+veggie mix as a treat. LaFeber finch food is their primary diet, so the seeds are a treat for them.
