Re: Pearl-Headed Silverbills
pearl heads are beautiful but ....
no difference between male and female
hard to breed , normal african silvebills are 100 times easier
good luck tho

Re: Pearl-Headed Silverbills
Didn't even know Pearl-Headed Silverbills existed, I only knew about the African and Indian Silverbills.
As a side note, $13 sounds like a nice price on Africans, though I prefer the Indian variety..... one of my Indian Silverbills was from Petsmart, it seems he was a lot more expensive than $13!

When we first got the pearl heads, they were pretty hard to distinguish. However, it's been a while now and you can easily tell the male from the female. The males head is mostly white full of little "pearls". The female's head is mostly the grey, with not as many pearl spots. I imagine that the male is getting in to breeding mode now, and is singing a lot. I can try and record his song, it's really unique!

Re: Pearl-Headed Silverbills
pearl heads have 6 sub-species , depends from what area they are , there's no visual difference between male and female , if you have birds from 2 different sub-species you might think you have a pair but can have 2 males or 2 females , even singing doesn't say everything , i had a beautyful male with clear white dots and was singing till SHE laid her first egg
dna check is the only way to make sure , dunno how that goes in the usa or canada but here they want 3 tail feathers and 10usd and within 5 days you get the result !!!
good luck

Re: Pearl-Headed Silverbills
Wow really? That's crazy. The one "male" sings all the time, and the "female" is practically silent. Still no eggs laid or mating activity, though. I am thinking about moving them to their own cage for a while to give them some privacy. Not sure are a true pair, but they are definitely adorable either way.
