Johnson/sudan grass seed safe?
Johnson/sudan grass seed safe?
Are Johnson grass and sudan grass seeds safe for finches to eat? I have read that the plants may be toxic to livestock. I think they feed the seeds to birds in Australia as well as use the plants in aviaries.

If there is one thing I have seen from having a mixed aviary. The Bengalese will meticulously pick out red mana and leave the spray millet, whereas the African Silverbills pretty much eat anything I put in the aviary.
They will instinctively know what they should not eat. There are a number of wild grass types in the aviary, yet they do not touch the seed.

I can't answer whether these seeds are safe, but if you do find they are OK, I'd check the label for any herbicide treatment. Many seeds for sale in the U.S. have been treated with one thing or another.

I found wild johnson grass growing and would plant those seeds.
