Yes... it is really great this time of the year. Once it gets hot... it's gone

Re: Chickweed time!!
Wow, the birds look like they are having a blast at the salad bar!!!
Such a plethora of vibrant colors -- gorgeous!!!
Have you tried transplanting some of the chickweed in a shady spot of your garden? I just grabbed a bunch and tossed it under trees and various parts of my garden where there is shade -- the chickweed will easily root if thrown on the grown and watered. They grow excellent in shady areas (side of house, under trees, etc). I noticed this way, they last year round. I'm going to pick some tomorrow and feed my birds as well. Thanks for sharing the gorgeous picture.

I keep meaning to get some seeds to grow some myself for the birds
Does it just grow naturally in your yard or do you plant it specifically for the birds?

It grows everywhere. It's honestly considered a noxious weed for most gardeners. You should have no problem finding it if you take walks around the neighborhood.nixity wrote:I keep meaning to get some seeds to grow some myself for the birds

Purple -- It's not a vegetable. It is a common weed, like dandelion, that birds absolute LOVE.

I am not sure if we have that much in CO as it is too cold. But I will look for them or get some seeds and grow them in door .... Thanksbugaboo5 wrote:It grows everywhere. Unfortunately it is all over my yard anywhere there is shade. It doesn't grow in the hot sun. My husband teases me when we cut the grass because it looks untidy when I won't let him cut the chickweed.nixity wrote:I keep meaning to get some seeds to grow some myself for the birds

Re: Chickweed time!!
I don't think I could rid my yard of chickweed if I tried. I gave up on a perfectly manicured yard years ago. My "grass" is really just assorted weeds. We call it the birds salad bar.

Re: Chickweed time!!
Chickweed?? Is that like the green millet type seeds that grow? I threw some birds seed down last year and have something growing up this year from the seeds birds did not eat. Just wondering.

No... that is no the same thing as chickweed. But... chickweed will take over your yard and grow on absolutely anything. Today while I was working in my yard I literally pulled some up that was growing on TOP of some bark. Goodness!!!
