Post by ranchnanny » Sat Mar 17, 2012 5:27 pm

Have a chance to obtain 2 parrot finches but I want to know if they will
be good cage mates in a mixed flight.

How big is the flight? Parrot finches are extremel active and can get aggressive at breeding time unless they have a good size territory to defend.

I could put them in a smaller flight by themselves.

Parrot finches are usually very good in mixed collections, it all comes down to size of aviery/cage and who they will be sharing it with. What colour parrot finches are you getting? Who will they be living with? When I had them they never had any issues with my other birds only the occasional bicker at breeding time around their nest. You are keeping them in cages not an aviery(if that's correct) the main issue which I would be concerned about is they can get obese in smaller cages so you would have yo watch that they don't get fat and lazy but other than that they are great finches which I will be getting a few pair myself this year again.

They are red headed and the flight contains societies, silverbills, gouldians, orange cheek waxbills and zebras.

They can crossbreed with gouldian. The flight is probably large enough. Sometimes all you can do is try them. I have some that are so sweet, even when breeding but I have a few that are extremely aggressive. I have seen the hens attack other nesting females even in a 16' x14' aviary. So it depends on the individual birds also. If you have another cage...you can always seperate them if need be...
but be aware about crossbreeding , especially if you have 2 of the same sex and they are not a male/female pair.

Should be good. How are your two zebra hens? Are they aggressive or mean?

They should be OK. In my opinion they will be better in the aviary than a cage.

@ Sherry, did you get them?

@ Gaz, forbes and red heads do good together, but can hybridize. Firetails are known to be aggressive, so it would be best to keep them alone unless you have a large aviary

Dante no I didn't get them. I decided to wait since I have about 9 canary chicks due to hatch soon and I will have my hands full with them.
