Once again, awesome. I cant wait till i get a big aviary built so i can have the many types of finches as you have. all i can have are zebras and more others because there isnt enough room to add any other birds especialy since all my zebras are sitting on eggs.
Society Finches, Fire Finches, Strawberry Finches, Owl Finches, Plum Head Finch, Goldbreast Waxbill Finches, Orange Cheek Waxbill Finches, Blue Capped Cordon Finches, Zebra Finches, Bronzewing Mannikin Finches, Red-Cheek Cordon Blue Finches, and Button Quail

there are still a lot of finches that I am going to add to that aviary over the next few months. owls, red faced parrot finches, more gouldians, plumheads and cubans.

I wouldn't add any other finch species to the cage you have your zebras in, the zebs would never allow the others to breed. zebs are cute but to pushy/aggressive to have in an aviary with other more passive finches.

Mick your birds are so incredibly gorgeous, and what a wonderful aviary setup for them. It must be so delightful to sit beside your aviary and just watch and listen.

You are going to love your cordon blues. I recently purchased a pair of the red cheeked and they are wonderful birds.
I just wish they would show some interest in breeding.

Please tell me what the bird is in the 9th pic. It has red on it.
That is also a beautiful bird. I would love to add it to my collection of birds in my aviary.

the particular birds you are asking about df are called "emblema picta" another name is "painted finch". they truly are a beautiful bird. the male has the brighter red of the two. I think there is a better picture of them in the other post I made recently called "my finches". they only cost $40 -$50 a pair here locally, hope they are not to expensive for you

Mickp. Wonderful pics and wonderful range of birds.

I really like the wire you installed in the back to hang nest boxes on, very clever. Hope you don't mind me copying it in my outdoor aviary.

thats what we are all here for willie to lern from each other by sharing our experiences, so pls copy anything you want.

featherharp: I cannot wait for the plants that I have growing in the aviary to get bigger as the birds will then have natural greenery to hide amongst and to nest in some of it will at different times of the year supply seed heads for the birds as well

Good luck with getting your plants to grow...I would think with all that Finch Poop...er I mean Fertilizer they should do real good if the birds don't eat them all up...hehe!

Now another question....how DO you catch a certain bird in such a big aviary with all those branches for them to escape to...I have enough trouble catching mine in my little flight cage!

Did I see a lil blue parakeet in the mix? What all types do you have? please share...I am just into the thrid month of my aviary and am hoping to add new birds soon. I am down to 8 total, two died for unknown reasons so knock on wood everyone else is great!

the red bird, what is he? is it passive enough for all finch types? love the color!

When I have to catch a finch in my walk in aviary I have come up with a plan to set a trap which causes less stress than chasing it around.

I put an empty cage in there with the doors open. They I put one of their
favorite treats such as either an ear of corn or some millet.

When the one I want goes in......... shut the door quick!
Sometimes I may catch one I don't need, but it is easier to let them back out then to catch them.
So far it works for me except for the little gold breasted ones and they manage to slip through the bars.

to catch my finches I have an area that I set up around the feed dishes, which encloses this area, I then take the birds feed away for a day 2 at most, when I put the food back in the birds go to it and I lower a trap door. I then have a smaller area to work in which is less stressful for the birds. havent hurt any birds yet so this area may end up being made permanent.

the red finch is called a Senegal Fire finch, there is a section on it in the finch info centre I think and also at another site called avianweb.

there are no parrakeets or parrots in my aviary, the blue bird is a red cheeked cordon.

here is a link to a pic of the aviary
