How soon to replace nestbox?

Post by L in Ontario » Thu Apr 10, 2008 11:08 am

I've had a pair of Gouldians on 6 eggs for the past 3 weeks. I checked the eggs this morning and all 6 are clear with large airpockets, so I removed the nestbox. Today would have been day 22 of them sitting tight. That was the first-ever clutch for both Gouldians. The female is chewing on the cuttlebone again for the past two days. They are both under 2 years of age.

As they have been doing nothing but sitting on the clear eggs for the past 22 days and it's been a month since she laid the first egg - how soon can I replace the nestbox for them to try once more?

I think you could go ahead and put the nestbox back in now. The biggest stress for parents is raising the babies, and for the hens, laying the eggs.

That confirms my thoughts. Thanks Sally.
