Dante, every red factor in the show ring is colorfed! The disqualification comes from the bird looking artificially colorfed.
There is a fine art to getting a red factor colobred canary (not to be confused with an American singer) to be as red as can be without looking artificial... such as red feet.
This never would apply to the American singers :D

This topic was started about Magic Red, a product designed and created and approved for Canary science, ceo Dean K
Just clarifying because someone implying that it contains bugs based on speculation written on the very post about the Magic Red product may confuse people into mixing this ingredient up with what the Actual ingredients are in the Magic Red.

Candace I want to clarify I did not imply....simply asked since the "bug product" has been used for hundreds of years as an organic, natural dye which also was recently approved by the FDA....Simple question...no need for defensive posturing. I am simply here to learn and share information.

Besides if he did use the insects for their color property it would also be a bit of additional protein!

Okay cindy, I didn't read this as a question.. I read it as a statement... and I do try and offer accurate info also and thought you were trying to say that Dean must be using this simply because of some googling you did. I do defend my friends research and products and didn't want anyone to confuse his product with the bug product used in Starbucks coffee :D Glad it is all clear and understood by any one who may read this post that Q started about Magic Red.... with the proof on the pictures in front of your eyes :D
Beautiful by the way, Q :D

I believe that what Dean was saying has been approved by the FDA is his secret recipe.

Congrats Dean =D> =D> Of course I really don't think that anyone should be expecting Dean to give out all of the ingredients and ratios. At least not until he is able to get the patent on this product thus making it his and only his product.
Hello Janine...
1) First allow me to complement your name, your name is one of the most beautiful names i ever heard through my past living days, i have one son(Jad) and girl (Jennah) it means Heaven in Arabic language but if God will send me a second girl i would love to name her Janine your name means in my language: more than Heaven.(Heavens) :) .
2) I can tell from your post above that you have a big, open minded, smart, and realistic i am so happy to have someone like you in this forum.

Allow me to use this post to explain one more time to other members about the
magic red

The magic red is absolutely made of only dried natural Fruits and Veg's, grounded to powder, there is no chemical added to it at all.
It has 24 different type of ingredients in it, The main one is the Sumac seed, its one of the Cardinal bird favorite seed to eat in the wild and to keep his color red Also, blue birds love to eat Sumac seed but it does not color their feathers with red thats why i added the other 23 ingredients after long time of study to be able to change yellow and orange canary's colors to red which the Canthazanthin can not act like it .

Cindy... I am not Rich or famous and i really do not care to be as long as i am a happy person as the way i am, i love to give and share search and discover, absorb what my canaries need and get to their brain to see how they think and what can be done for them to come up with new thing,s to make them and people happier , Is not better than i set doing nothing but been negative , i think you will agree with me on this one because i know that you are the same way, you like to read, study and discover things too.

1) Have any one ever thought to think what is the main reason that make birds use nesting material and why they build the nest the shape of V letters from the inside,as i explained it in my website/page breeding canaries/question # 9 ?
2) Have any one thought to come up with natural un harmful color to make any yellow or orange canary darker red than the cardinal.
3) Have any one ever thought to think why canaries has 18 flight feathers in each wing and 12 main feathers in the tail and which feather will molt first and how long it will take the total of the 48 feathers to be molted ?
4) Is any one out there can tell the sex of 2 hours old new hatch canary young from the first look with out DNA test ?

Well i do know all that, not because iam the smartest, iam not but i believe it has to do with passion and deep love to my canaries and to provide people with answers for a questions they have .

I will keep going, creating and discover things about canaries because of my promise to my Grandfather to the last day of my life.
By the way you may think iam crazy to say that iam studying now how many time canaries poop every 60 minutes ?
I believe there is nothing wrong with that since it is science .

I was not born in the USA but i am proud to publish my web site and my canary book in it. so wish me a good luck.

Cindy 's Quote -"Besides if he did use the insects for their color property it would also be a bit of additional protein![/quote]

Dean,
Thank you for your replies. We are all here to learn and share .
As the bug thingy goes - It is interesting for me and I am thinking
WHAT - IF like Cindy quote above

Lets say that you have not thought about mixing this bug thingy in the Magic red and Now with suggestion from Cindy that " It would also be a bit of additional protein!"
What is pros and cons?
I am very curious to know, What if You will find out something - two product lines
1. The Magic red original
2. The Magic red with " bug thingy"

I am not so expert in this matter so I call as bug thingy for now - If the product works --- More deep red in Canaries and More protein...

Then What is NEXT ????

Like you guys all know I am counting down my Red American singers 27 chicks project http://finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19571
and with out the The Magic Red - I can't do that -

Q, this is why I brought this up not only that the insect would provide protein but is also a natural colorant or dye.

My very first posting on this thread started off with the words "Just Curious...." it was meant as a question unfortunately I neglected to puncturate properly...

My curousity prompted me to ask the questions I did...googling natural red colorants FDA approved. I could have just asked the Entomologist sitting across the breakfast table from me!!!

The insect, the female Dactylopius coccus (Cochineal or carmine) is completley organic so that is a plus.

You can buy the product....it would be interesting to feed only the Cochineal or carmine to a test pair of two without any other additive/product just to see what the it will do colorwise in the birds. Could it be more powerful than the foods flamingoes eat that give them their stunning colors???

As far as The Magic Red goes - I know it works for canaries of Dean's research- Now I am curious but not willingly to test Cochineal or carmine on a pair yet as I don't have that many for what IF. But it really makes me think if that works for flamingoes? As you all know I have some issue with bug thingy  . I know there is not thing wrong with it but with my back ground of what I had to hear - I hesitate - Maybe I can convince The Canary Man. Will see what he has to advise me

Q, I was not very fond of bugs until I met my husband, learned a lot from him. His field is mosquito borne diseases. I helped him collect insects for all his drawers of mounted insects for his degree!!! I netted but did not touch!

I do not have canaries at this time, I would like to someday....saw some stunning reds at a show a while back, the Opals interest me.

My mother bred them, I loved hearing the house full of song. Every afternoon it was training for 1/2 an hour, we all read as my mother played the songs to train them, when one would start to sing just a little bit we would get so excited but had to stay quiet....it was so interesting and fun.

Q, i do not think that i can make red color darker red than the magic red, i believe i came up with extremely red color for canaries, plus safe and natural and easy to work with except making a big mess in my kitchen, i feel bad for my wife that she has to clean around with me using bleach that is how strong the color is  .....

Any darker red will be black red witch is can be controlled by increasing the amount of the magic red provided to the canaries or finches .

When canaries poops turn red that means their body is getting color more than it can takes, in this case we should decrease the amount of the magic red provided to them, rather than that it will be just wast of products .

If you like the black red canary color" as showing on my web site"
page, keep increasing the amount of the magic red but you need to stop the increasing when their poop turn red to avoid wasting the products.

I am sorry i hate Bugs i will not even think of using it. may be somebody else would someday.

Dean K.
