Antibiotics at pet stores?
Antibiotics at pet stores?
Hi, I was just curious if any of you have used the antibiotics at pet stores? If so did it work and what were you treating your finches for? I don't need it but I'm trying to have everything on hand for just in case situations. Thanks.

I will be honest and admit that I have used the 8in1 antibiotic on a set of fledglings with dirty butts. I lost 2 but managed to save 2 others.

That is a very good question, as if those antibiotics work, that is a readily available source for members, instead of having to wait for something to be overnight shipped to them. I have not used them myself, so it will be interesting to hear of others' experiences.

I admit that I did as well. It depends on the birds and the situation.
I save canaries and finches. Save few goulds

BTW these babies were gouldians. I had a clutch of parent raised 3 SFY boys and 1 normal BH WB GB girl. 2 days after fledging I found the first yellow baby passed away. I had no idea what was going on, so I decided to take my chances and go with the broad spectrum antibiotic (lets get it all) lost the second on the first day of treatment, but saved the last 2. Really glad I did, because it resulted in my beautiful Golden boy.lovemyfinch wrote:I will be honest and admit that I have used the 8in1 antibiotic on a set of fledglings with dirty butts. I want to be prepared. I don't have any chicks or eggs yet but I'd like to have everything on hand. I have a pair of zebra finches and a female cinnamon pearl cockatiel. I hope when the zebra finches do have eggs that the chicks are health but I want to do as much research as I can.

I have used the 8-1 marvel aid in past....it actually was a great product...I managed a petstore in the late 90's, and would use it on the birds there if we got some in that were under the weather. I used to swear by marvel aid and heat light.
However, i think it has been discontinued, and I have tried a few of the others in an emergency. Now I order online the generic baytril to have on hand. I keep it in fridge in a dark bottle just in case. My hubby worked as a tech with an avian vet few years back and Baytril was the standard broad spectrum go to antibiotic for birds. I know it will treat a variety of issues....infections from injury..respiratory and others. I feel much better knowing it is just in the other room....should I need it. First thing is to have a heat light on hand....sometimes heat alone can do wonders for a bird under the weather or stressed.

What is this 8in1?? I plan on stocking up on some supplies..
I need cocci care, worm away, feather fast and some abba boxes from Blake's site, and I need to get calcium from the pharmacy. Should I add the 8in1 to my list?

Re: Antibiotics at pet stores?
A lot of the meds sold in the stores (Ornacyn, Ornacyn-Plus) are not the same potency as the meds you would get from a supplier.
I'm not sure exactly why this is.. but for example, the Ornacyn is Erythromycin 29g Activity.
The Erythromycin that LGF.com sells is equivalent to about twice that potency at 57.8g Erythromycin Activity.
So - I find them to be less effective but at the same time in an emergency situation it is better than nothing if you can't wait for shipping. I just have never seen anything other than the Ornacyn or Marvel Aid, which is "sulfadimethoxine" but I can't find anything regarding the concentration.

I think I'll get some Baytril to have on hand. I'm not in a big hurry so I can wait on shipping. Thank you.
Re: Antibiotics at pet stores?
Does anyone know of a good reliable website to order Baytril?
