Lafebers Finch Food

I supplement my seed mix with the Lefebers, they also get egg food and greens every day. Millet is readily available and they get a piece of banana, orange or apple to snack on every other day. Cuttlebone and vitamin in the water as well. Is there anything I'm missing?

What is the best seed mix consist off? There is a lot of waste in my dish, they seems to only like certain seeds in it. It's called FortiDiet.

I would recommend some sort of greens -- this could be dark lettuces (romaine), kale, dandelion, broccoli heads, etc.

In my opinion, the best kind of mix is one that consists of primarily millet varieties (proso, white, red, siberian, etc) and canary seed. My birds hardly touch the rapeseed or the niger (both black oily seeds). If you are supplementing with pellets (LaFebers is wonderful, as is Zupreem), a good mix is the Kaytee Supreme Finch mix. Thanks. I will go try to find that seed today. So, a seed mixture with less black seed is better correct? I give them greens, they had dandelion yesterday, lettuce today with dandelion flowers. They are spoiled!

Yes, I believe a mixture with less black seeds is preferred. However, I want to note that you should base your needs upon your observations. What are you noticing being wasted the most? And what are the reasoning(s)? Is it because you are filling their food dishes too high? Or is it because the birds are trying to push aside seed varieties they do not like? Those are some things you should consider when trying to find a seed mixture that best fits the need of you and your birds. Good luck! They do sound very much loved and spoiled.

I find that they are pushing all the black seeds aside, eating the paler colored ones. I will make a. Ore of the waste and go from there. Tha ks for your advice!

My birds are primarily on pellet food; Lafeber's, Zupreem, and Roudybush. They get seeds only as a treat.

Birds can change their diet over time. They may eat one seed and not another, then a few month later switch and eat the seed they ignored before. So one should be careful about feeding only the seeds that they eat, because you may miss the diet change.

I find that my finches in general prefer white/light colored seeds and hardly touch the dark seeds. But even this differs, as some will eat dark seeds...sometimes. On the other hand, my wife's canary scarfs up all the dark seeds in his dish. The finches also ignore all the "fortified" stuff (pellets) that is in the seed mix.

I give mine egg every day only if they are molting.
Breeding birds get egg up to 5x a day, depending on what phase of breeding. Laying, nestlings or fledglings, and how many chicks.
If they are not molting or breeding, they get egg 2 or 3x a week.

To make it easy on me, I mix various green and orange veggies into the egg (same dish), although I could just give them veggies separately. Be careful on the veggies. Certain greens could make their poop runny. And some are not good for them. I think the FIC has a list of good/bad foods.

I feed mine veggies and greens daily. They sometimes eat more sometimes less. Mine like the ABBA seed. After trying different types that's the one that seems to cause the least waste. But it will depend on the type of birds you have too, I don't have zebras.
