Post by skyjump100 » Mon May 07, 2012 5:30 am

Hi All,
Just for my records (seeing as though I've got my first eggs and need to get my records updated) would you know what the correct name for my blue boys head colour please.

Both Red and Yellow headed blue gouldians look the same so it could be either.
He looks nice, good luck

As Debbie said, it's not possible to know if its head is red or yellow by looking at it. "Straw head" is the term most often used for this color.

He is a lovely bird! Best of luck with him.

By the look of his beak, he is a yellow head.
The beak looks like its orange/yellow, if he was a red carrier, it would be going red .

From the Finch Information Center's gouldian genetic pages:
http://www.finchinfo.com/genetics/lady_ ... colors.php
This body color can occur in combination with any head or breast color, however, because the blue gene suppresses the expression of red and yellow, any bird with a genetically red or yellow head will appear to have a salmon colored head, and the normally yellow belly will appear off-white.

The blue gouldians do not have red or yellow tipped beaks, they are pearly white.

Actually blue birds cannot deposit red or yellow pigments in the beak at all so this color you see might just be a trick the photo is playing.
That is why they always appear ivory in color unless it is a blue hen in breeding condition, in which case it would still turn dark.

The only way to know what the head color of a Blue series bird (blue, pastel, silver .. in terms of Red or Orange) is to know its genetics/background.
