Petsmart rescue

Post by rkn » Sun Apr 27, 2008 7:36 pm

Today i bought five finches from pet smart so not really a rescue as all are quite nice! So I now have 8 different species living together with the exception of my single female zebra who is in the time out bird cage which is within the larger aviary itself so she's not out any company jsut can't disrupt the peace.

Today I got two star and I am hoping mae/female combo! anyone know how two tell? I got one with very pronounced red face and a lighter faced one but get this! The lighter face star is peeping and making song like noises so maybe is an immature male? what do they sound like? When it makes this noise the other star could care less. Is that normal if it were male female? confused yet again....

got a brone maniken, way cute and is suppose to be a male.

an owl finch, was all they had and they thought he sings so maybe a male? I hope so!

and finally a gold breasted wax bill who looks like is in the middle of motleting and is already lost in the big aviary. banged himself into the window but seems fine. It is a male. I am suprised how "TINY" they are!!!!
super cute lil guys!!!

so a fun weekend in the city ended with a trip to the pet store and just couldn't leave empty handed. also got some dryed meal worms so am hoping this is a teat for them since I FLUNKED egg food 101!

Congrats on all the new birds! With Stars, only the males sing. Also, as with many species, the juveniles look just like hens, so unless you know the age, it can be confusing. My Star juvies fledged Feb. 28, so they are about 2 1/2 months old. They are going thru their juvie molt now, all have their 'stars' showing, but very little head color as yet. I have spotted one singing, but can't keep track of it, as 3 of them are identical. I believe I am going to put different color split bands on them, so when I see one singing, I can check out its leg color and know which one it is in the future.

Check out the FIC info on Stars under Species. There are a lot of photos showing difference between male and female. Usually, the female's face color only goes back to about her eyes, whereas the male's face color will usually extend beyond the eyes.

They all seem to be getting along well! My one star finch I don't think is a good flyer yet? He sits more then anything in one area so am watching him to see if maybe he got injured when boxed up and so forth. He flies a short distance when i coax him to but that's all. He is a male forsure, great coloring so hope he's ok!!!

The other star is busy! flying all over the aviary. It has the markings of a hen if going by the pics on this site, but makes this odd noise, sounds like a dog lapping up water? like a thumb da thumb and peeps some. I wish i has speakers so I could hear the links on the site would really help.

So far all is good. I did not quarantine them as they appeared healthy and vibrant at the store. I understand they just finished a four month quarantine so not sure what else to look for in them.

The owl is truly a nice bird! I definately got to get more of those! I was told it is a male but he is peeping softly. what sounds do they make?

All seem to be happy and healthy! I have a pending trade happening. I am trading my male owl off for waxbills. I love the waxbills!!! And only have the single owl and he'll be happier with his own kind. So hopefully today or tomorrow we'll have a new face in the aviary!

BTW my gold breasted male, he was molying when i got him, he looked like a plucked chicken...lol He is now in full feather and wow what color these lil guys have! am hooked on waxbills.

I just got rid of mine, traded him off for waxbills. I have seen them at petsmart in our area most of the time so not too hard to find imo. Maybe try there?

Thank you. Now that I think about it, my owl was the only one who liked having his pic taken. Lil guy would actually come closer instead of running away like the rest. Ahhh miss him but he got a great home and I traded ok.
