What do I have?

Post by love4finches » Tue May 22, 2012 6:32 pm

I needed a "regular" female for one of my regular lite colored males. I have this sinking feeling this is a CWF female. What do you think? This is the only pic I was able to take.
I am noticing that the old pair I have now the female is calling for one of the new birds. FYI all the pairs are in separate cages so don't understand why the old pair female (never had a clutch) is calling to the new pair male (just got them) even though the old pair preen each other, nothing more. When the old female hear's the new male she loses interest in her mate. Don't know what to do. I need major help here. I should stay with regular ole greys I think. #-o

Tried to take another pic. All come out blurry:

If this is a CWF would I put it with another CWF? All my others are the regular white ones. Very hard to get good colored finches here in Jersey.

Can you get a clear picture of her tail and her cheeks...she might be NG OB. Is the orange in her cheeks blotchy?

She looks fawn to me, maybe split to OB because the cheek patch is lighter, but i think the white you are reffering to is CFW(chestnut flanked white) But you got the letters correct!
If you can get another pic less blurry, it will be easier. She is very pretty!

OH! as to the new pair you got, did you get them from the same place? they may be related. Maybe try putting the hen to the male from the other pair and the male from the new pair to the other hen. See how that works out!

Figured it out (OB). If indeed this is what she is (?) what would you breed her with. Remember I don't have the very few colors. Is there anywhere on the forum that you can buy finches?

there are a lot of breeders on the forum! most don't ship so you would have to pick up. And a lot of breeders give discounts to ONLY finchforum members exclusively. Ask around, i am sure there would be SOME that might help out!
As for OB, a really cool couple mutations to get a mostly orange and black bird is to breed to Black breasted and black face. Right now i 'may' have a bird split to orange breasted, i DO have a bird split to black breasted. now i just need some split males.

So just ask around :)

Thank you both for your suggestions. I am forum illerate (I think I spelled that wrong) #-o Where on the forum would I ask who's selling. Is that permitted on this forum? Don't want to do anything wrong.

I'm a very small hobby breeder. (I may not use the right color lingo but here goes). What do I have not breeding:

males: I'm told FF Silver/pied, fawn/OB.

females: a lite grey (lighter than the regular grey), FF Silver/OB

I have several of each above.

Mostly I was given my finches from a woman who needed to downsize and I told her I loved her birds. I always thought zebras were just grey. That's the only color I know and don't have.

What colors do you think I should add to my very little flock. I am taking it very slow since I'm new at this and want to do right by my babies. I just love finches.

At one time I wanted to get Gouldians but can't find anyone to help me sex them and I'm told they are not as hardy as zebras. Yet, I read this board and you Gouldian owners seem to be doing just fine.

Anyway I'm ranting. I need to get more finches of different colors. I have an aviary to house quite a few so suggestions and what to breed to what will be very much appreciated. Thanks to you all for being so patient with a newbie.

I am just answering some of the mutation things :)
For buying finches, you can ask a lot of breeders. Make a thread asking for breeders in or near your area! it is allowed but make sure to post it in the marketplace that you are looking for certain mutations!

For the male fawn/OB i would breed that exact male to this female! if you get OB chicks at all, then both are split and your hen is either OB or split to OB. But she also looks fawn, i am not a big fan of breeding like to like but he would be your best bet for this female.

As to the light grey female, she may be lightback or isabel(i think, correct if wrong).
Our best bet would be if you could post pictures of them.

You can pair your FF Silver/pied, fawn/OB with your female(s) Silver Isabel/OB (FF Silver/OB)...offspring should be FS and Isabels, Silver Isabels OB you may have some that looks split to pied, you may get fawn Isabels females as well. OB is recessive.

You can take the NG OB and pair her with a FS/pied/OB...you may get Isabels OB and Silver Isabels OB (orange breast).

WOW! You gals are unbelieveable. The knowledge you have is incredible! I can't thank you enough for the time you all put in in helping me to understand all this. Don't know how you do it. My sincerest thanks. I will keep you all informed how things are working out. So glad I found this forum. Your little furries are lucky to have you and so am I.

PS. What is the difference between SF and DF. I know what the letters mean. Just don't understand what each one is.
