Damn feathered rabbits

Post by mickp » Mon Apr 21, 2008 5:26 am

yes I am talking about zebras, little turds just wont stop breeding.
am trying to get rid of them all by giving them away but it fels as though for each pair that leaves more pop out of the nests. I even tried removing the nests but they still managed to build using anything they could find.
at present there are approx 25 adults with 9 babies in nests. thee is a mixture of normal, pied and charcoal zebras in this little aviary (by little I mean 9' x 7'x 3')

Sounds like you are having quite the problem with your Z's.

I am glad I don't have that problem...that is why I only have 2 boys.

I don't keep Zebras any more for just that reason. I was lucky enough to contract with a local pet store and depending on the season, he paid me $6 to $8 for each one he bought. However, it really got to be too much for me - not to mention the parents. I removed the nests and they would lay eggs in seed cups so, I bought artificial finch eggs from Finch Niche and kept replacing the real eggs with fake ones. I keep doing that until I was able to either sell or give away all the babies I could Then I was able to sell all the Zebra adults. Although I love Zebras and really enjoy watching them in their breeding process they are just too prolific for me.

Now, I keep Lady Goulds. They are no where as prolific and, of course, I have learned how to schedule breeding better. I only let them breed when I want them to.

Since you're in Australia can't you just release them? They are natives aren't they?

I guess I could just let them go, but wont do so. wouldnt be fair to the birds. they are all aviary bred and wouldnt have a clue how to survive in the wild

They might be able to make it in the wild. If they find a flock of other zebras they might group up with them and copy everything they do.

mickp, you may have to separate the males and females. After a short while, any eggs laid will be infertile. At least that stops the babies.

no need to now Sally, from this coming saturday I will be feathered rabbit free. a person who is just starting out with birds is taking the lot from me.
he thinks he has a bargain and is happy, while I'll be able to clean the small aviary out and set it up for either lavenders, auroras or plumheads have to see which is available first lol as I want all three

Lavenders, Auroras, Plumheads--much more satisfying than Zebras! Glad you worked something out, everyone's happy.
