Fire Finch Fledglings - Pics added

Post by Sally » Tue May 06, 2008 11:46 am

Today four Senegal Fire finch babies left the nest! I could see into the nest and knew there were two, hopefully three, but today it's official--four. They are already banded, but when I went to take pics, my battteries had run down. I will let them calm down now and get pics later. These were the most squirmy babies to band--I wasn't dropping bands, but these guys were flinging the bands off before I could get them over the back toe. And they never made a sound in the nest, but didn't shut up while I was handling them.

They are in the same breeding cage with my wild-caught pair of Goldbreasts, who have just settled down to incubate, so this may mess up the GBs. Hopefully not.

Here are the photos:

This is one of the babies sitting in front of the Goldbreast nest.

This is the family, plus the male Goldbreast, who tried to get in all the photos. Daddy Fire is on the perch, with Mama Fire on top of the nest, far right.

This is the Fire Finch family, Daddy Fire in center, Mama fire top right, four babies.

Wow - so many babies for you Sally! You must really be getting the hang of banding now.

I can identify with the babies trying to fling the bands off - my Gouldians seemed to be trying that last time as their foot kept squirming out of my fingers while I'm trying to get it up their leg... a littler further...! Real squirmers they were. I have 5 more to band tonight. I plan to band them as soon as I get home and then put fresh soft food in all the cages so the parents can eat and feed them to settle them down again.

Congratulations on getting your latest babies done. :D

Sally

Congrats on your new babies. So exciting.

Can't wait to see pictures.

I tried to take some of mine yesterday but then weren't being very cooperative.
